15 things to know about Torrey Smith

Fifteen things to know about Torrey Smith, the free-agent wide receiver the Eagles nabbed from San Francisco.

1. His two years in San Fran were mostly a disaster, though an awful offense (including QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert) was a factor. The contract the Niners gave Smith in 2015 included $22 million guaranteed.

2. San Fran also had instability at coach and offensive coordinator. Kyle Shanahan will be the 49ers' third head coach  in three years. Shanahan replaced Chip Kelly.

3. Smith had 30 TD receptions in 64 games with Joe Flacco at quarterback. He had seven TD grabs in 28 games for San Fran.

4. Turned 28 on Jan. 26.

5. Listed at 6-0, 205 pounds and still has very good speed.

6. Had a career-worst 40.8 percent catch rate last season (49 targets, 20 receptions). Other 2016 catch rates for comparison's sake: Jordan Matthews (62.4), Nelson Agholor (52.2), Brandin Cooks (66.7), Kenny Stills (51.9), DeSean Jackson (56.0), Kenny Britt (61.3), and Julio Jones (64.3).

7. The first three receptions of Smith's career were touchdowns.

8. Missed the final four games in 2016 with a concussion after his head slammed to the Levi's Stadium ground in a loss to the visiting Jets.

9. Smith was told by his wife, Chanel, that he cried as he left the field. "I had no clue," he said later that week. "I don't remember anything."

10. Smith's most compelling performance arguably came in Week 3 in 2012, hours after he learned his brother, Tevin Jones, was killed in a motorcycle accident. Smith played the game in Jones' honor and had 127 receiving yards and two touchdowns as the Ravens rallied to beat the Patriots. It started a run of eight wins in nine games and was a pivotal moment in the Ravens' Super Bowl season.

11. Smith has four touchdowns in eight career playoff games – all with Baltimore. He had two catches for 35 yards in Super Bowl XLVII as the Ravens beat the 49ers.

12. He's the oldest of seven children, and the fight against domestic violence is an important cause to him.

13. His official foundation, the Torrey Smith Family Fund, helps "provide youth with the tools they need to identify, unleash, and reach their full potential." He'll host a charity basketball game in Baltimore on March 19.

14. When Smith was a child, his mother once had a gun held to her head in a car by an abusive boyfriend as Torrey sat in the back seat.

15. "It's something I think about often," Smith said told the Daily Press (Va.) prior to Supe 47. "Because for everything that happened to my mother, there's a million other people out there in the same situation. My mom was in an abusive relationship, and domestic violence is a problem in our country as a whole. I just happened to be one of those guys whose family happened to fit that mold."
