Sixers should focus on free agency
Michael Kaskey-Blomain, Assistant Sports Producer
Just as the Sixers must look toward the lottery, they must also focus on free agency.
At this point it seems that Jrue Holiday is the only lock to be in the lineup next season.
Thad Young, Evan Turner, and Spencer Hawes are all under contract, but none are immovable should the right offer materialize. Of course, the big Bynum decision will have an enormous impact on offseason spending and the Sixers' overall approach as to what type of players they should pursue.
If the Sixers don’t re-sign Bynum they will have an ample amount of cap space to pursue other options. However, even if they were to offer Bynum a deal, it will be for less than initially expected when they signed him last summer, and they should still have solid cap space to pursue other players.
Elton Brand (finally) comes off of the books this summer, as well as a couple other contracts that the franchise probably won’t follow up on, such as Nick Young and Dorell Wright.
It's safe to assume that top-tier free agent targets such as Chris Paul and Dwight Howard won’t want to sign with the recently struggling Sixers. So it seems that the Sixers will have to target the not-as-big-but-still-effective free agents. Obviously the Bynum domino needs to fall first, but after that move is made here are a handful of players that could help return the Sixers to relevancy.
Just Because you have the money doesntmean you have to spend it,and put Jrue in that catogory with Thad, Turner and Hawes. The first move shold be firing Dileo,Collins and the rest of the front office. And signing any of the above mention to max contracts is just plan stupid. The teams they are on arent exactly great teams so how are they going to help a bad team like the Sixers? one year deals this organization has already shown that they cant sign a good free agent bgwille
It amazes me how some people in media actually get these jobs. Young man please do your homework.
For 2013 the 76ers have the following players under contract:
Thad Young $8.6M
Spence Hawes $6.5M
J Richardson $6.2M
Evan Turner $6.7M
LaVoy Allen $3.1M
Kwamee Brown $3M
Jrue Holiday $11M
Arn Moultrie $1.1M
Total is $46.2....salary cap this year 2012 was $58.4 which leaves you with about $12M available. Not sure what the cap increase will be in 2013 but it doesn't typically increase that much. And that $46M number DOES NOT INCLUDE AB....so if they resign AB they will NOT have much flexibility at all for FA's also because they will need to sign their lottery pick.
So I'm not sure where you are getting your numbers from but the 76ers really don't have a lot cap space considering how many holes they need to fill.
In 2014 they will have around $20M to spend as long as they DON'T add any meaningless FA's this year plus they have added their 2013 and 2014 lottery pick players.....then you can be aggressive in FA.......do your homework....unless I'm missing something

the only person to get rid of is DOUG COLLINS, let CURRY or bring in a young coach, stop bring in these old a&& coaches, stop recycling. spaceout9
Also let's discuss Milsap....he's 28 yrs old...you say that "any contract offered to him should afford the team room to make offers to other players"
Milsap makes $7.2M this year....he will command $8-9M per based on this Ilysova and Ryan Anderson signed deals at around $8-8.5M per year last year and their stats are very similar....so if Milsap signs at an average of $9M per and the 76ers have about $12M ish available it doesn't leave much room.....also remember they must sign there lottery pick....the 10th pick last year Austin Rivers is making $2.3M......so the money doesn't really go far
Al Jefferson made $15M last year.....he isn't signing anything less than $12M per....Josh Smith will be in the same area and north....OJ Mayo will sign something north of $8M......you see my point
Unless the salary cap increases to never seen levels this team won't improve much at all
Also working against the 76ers is there will be 10 teams with at least $8M to spend and 6 or 7 with more money then the 76ers which will drive prices HIGHER.....we need PING PONG BALLS bbrady25
how exactly is Jrue untouchable again? That 2-24 performance? When was the last time a point guard took 24 shots? FireCollins
GO TO HELL DOOIE DOUG; AND BE PART OFF THE BURNING TEAM. WHEN YOU HATE THEM YOU DON'T PLAY THEM. spaceout9- sorry bbrady25 but your numbers are off a little here are the real numbers
Thad $8,850,000
Spence $6,600,000
Jrich $6,204,250
Turner $6,679,867
41,696,841
New Cap at least 59 maybe 60 so your talking about almost $18 which is a max deal without even making any moves.
Lavoy $3,060,000
Kwame $2,945,901
Jrue $9,213,484
Arnet $1,089,240
- I would like to address a few things, first. To "FireCollins" .. Jrue Holiday is untouchable. 18.2 PPG, 8.5 APG, shoots 43%. Unless I get an all-star in return, don't waste my time.
Firing DiLeo and Collins wouldn't be necessary, but it'd be an okay start. I'm alright with that, either way. Now to the post itself.
I'm okay with all of those names except Josh Smith. I want NO part of that headache. Smith wants max money when he's not a max player. We've had experience giving players more than what they're worth (see Iguodala, Andre), so let's not go down that route. For the right price, I'd love J.J. Hickson. He's 24 and he's averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds over the last two seasons. With him and Hawes, our front court could potentially average 30 and 20 -- not too bad.
If we're lucky, Turner's increase in points per game (13.5) this season could be a good sign. If not, let's see what we can get for him.
@FireCollins: you really evaluating Jrue off of one lousy game? do you watch the Sixers at all?
and to answer your other question, did you ever hear of Russell Westbrook? he has plenty of games taking more than 24 shots kevwalton
Dougie...go back to TBS...you are too burn't out to coach...
76ers hire Stan Van Gundy
Draft CJ from Lehigh who is a 4 year polished player who can score the ball
Sign FA Hickson as his best years are in front of him and he is a hard working big...
Trade Turner and Hawes for few 2's...so you have 3-- 2 nd round picks in a decent year of potential upstarts like the big kid from Bucknell who can bang...
Stan Van would love the opportunity to build a young team aroung the nucleus of Thad, Jrue and Moultree, Lavoy......plus, Stan looks like a Philly Guy!!!! Idaho76erfan
Eaglessuperfan>>>>>you didn't pay attention in math class:::Go to NBA salaries dot com website....the number is $46.2M
Plus eaglessuperfan.....you say the number is $41,969,841 and that they will have $18M to spend......REALLY
Grab a calculator and add up the number you have listed above...they actually add up to $44.75M NOT the $41,969,841.....dude you can't even add.....PLUS your number on Jrue Holiday is WRONG he will make $11M next not $9.2M
Another concussed eagles fan...... bbrady25
Bbrady25, it is YOU who should get your facts straight. Assuming the Sixers don't re-sign Bynum they will have upwards of $18 mil on the cap, which is enough to sign two of the mentioned free agents.
As for Jrue Holiday, he is slated to make $9.2 million this coming season, just as eaglessuperfan suggested. http://www.spotrac.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/jrue-holiday/
Boom. You're dumb, stop commenting when you do not know what you are talking about. Phillybill76
Phillybill76.....I know some people are challenged with a calculator so I'm going to make it real simple for you....I just copied and pasted the message from the other rocket scientist eaglessuperfan.....please add assuming you can the number that he has listed below it totals....are you ready $44.75....try again.....thats right its $44.75 NOT the $41.969 he claims.....also his number for Holiday is wrong....JH contract is 4yrs 46M....its $11M per season with incentives that can take it to $11.5M average so I am no more than possibly $1M off at best....remember the amount of the incentive counts against your cap number
Bottom line Phillybill76....you can't even use a basic calculator...lol
Another moron philadelphia fan.....joke
sorry bbrady25 but your numbers are off a little here are the real numbers

Also another piece of information to throw your way.....hopefully your brain can process.....lets say the 76ers have the 10th pick in the draft.....that 10th pick is slotted to make $2.4M in the first year. That money instantly counts against your cap even though you haven't signed that player yet.....so basically $2.4M less to spend on FA's
Tell me to slow down at anytime wouldn't want to confuse you.... bbrady25
Phillybill76......sorry can't hear you....is that calculator working.....hello McFly....... bbrady25
