You may know me from MTC, but I'm excited to be a contributor to our new staff blog, Pattison Ave.
I'm not sure what the exact focus will be here, but hopefully we give you a place to stop at multiple times throughout the day.
Since there's nothing that lends itself to blogging quite like hot stove talk, here are some links and rumors to take a look at:
** The Phillies have shown interest in right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney, according to FoxSports.com. Rodney had 37 saves in 38 opportunities last season, posting a 4.40 ERA in 73 appearances. He struck out 61 and walked 41, while giving up eight homers. Rodney has spent the first seven seasons of his career in Detroit and will turn 33 before Opening Day. And don't mind the first sentence on his player page (From Sept. 9: Rodney has been suspended for three games and fined for throwing a ball toward the stands following a game last week).
** Meanwhile, the same FoxSports.com blog suggests Pat Burrell could be headed back to the National League. Per the post, the Cubs and Rays are discussing a possible swap of Burrell for Milton Bradley.
** SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies are "pursuing [Chone] Figgins hard" as a replacement for Pedro Feliz. Per Heyman, the Phils could have competition in the Mets for Figgins. New York would want him as a possible second baseman or outfielder. Click here for Figgins' player page and career stats.
** And finally, since you can't listen to talk-radio for more than five minutes without hearing why the Phils should pursue Roy Halladay, a link that will serve as a punch to the stomach. Heyman reports that the Yankees will at least inquire about Halladay. Let's all slam our heads into our laptops together. On the count of three. One...two...
We need a reliable, right-handed starter, at the No. 2 or 3 level. I can't believe we're shopping for Figgins with this glaring need in pitching (not to mention a closer). Kendrick and Drabek might be good next year; might not be. We need a definite, RHP good next year -- Derek Lowe comes to mind -- because our hitters are in their prime. Let's go, Amaro!— eman- No, no, no. They don't need more offense. They need balance. Less power/HR's and strikeouts for higher average contact hitters. But as between Figgans, Beltre, Polanco and De Rosa, Figgans is by far the best choice as he solves our leadoff hitting deficiency. But for all the jirations we're going through trying to talk ourselves into getting Halladay (so the Yankees or Red Sox won't), today reminded me that we should pay more attention to our division. The Braves have a phenomenal staring five, six if you include Hudson who just re-signed with them. If they pick up a bat or two (and rumor has it that they are trying to trade Javier Vazquez in a deal for Adrian Gonzalez), they will close the gap on the Phils. They got to within 3 games in September. With their pitching, they could surprise. More reasons to get Halladay or another top, top end pitcher. Halladay and Figgans would be very nice adds.— bm2626
Comment removed.- Fernando Rodney?? I've seen him pitch many times and more often than not there are 2 runners on base as he goes for the final out. Runners which he put there. Do we need somebody else that makes us want to turn the TV off and check back later how it went? Rodney = Heart pumping, sweaty palms, nerves a wreck, can't sit still, all while watching the Phillies closer try to close a frigin game??— Ben Lee
- Say "NO" to Fernando Rodney!!!! We don't need another pitcher that walks!!!!!!! We need for someone to get OUTS!!!! Just a thought - mind you.
Koos would not need to be a versatile defender, he could start at third base for the next ten years.- Rodney would be great insurance for Lidge, plus having him would let Madson get valuable rest when needed. We saw how effective Madson was in '08 with legit help and then we saw how innefective he was in '09 when the bullpen was in shambles towards the end of the year. As for Rodney and his 4. something ERA? Yes, 3 points lower than Lidge, plus lets not forget that half of the games he pitched were in non-save situations and that could have led to his higher ERA.— ESFjellin
If Pat doesn't get out of Tampa, his career is definitely over. As an everyday starter, it probably is anyway.— EJAY- Kouzmanoff's stats at CBP over the past three seasons: .372/.400/.651, OPS 1.51. Plus, he's three years younger than Figgins, albeit not as versatile defensively. I have no idea what the Padres would want in return, but he would be a good fit. Garrett Atkins might be another option if the Rockies nontender him, but he had a terrible 2009 and his stats away from Coors are pretty awful.— paolibulldog
- Blue Jays GM said yesterday that he would not rule out a trade within his own division if the package was right. That could mean the Red Sox giving up Bucholz and some good prospects. Yanks would have to give up Hughes or Joba plus at least one or two top flight prospects, IMO.— OBLawyer

- You could choose to look at the fact that he was 37 for 38 in save oppurtunities. And that "4.00" ERA is at least 3.21 better than lidges was last year.— phillyfan14
