The Phillies have to be putting the bat on the ball, right? They've scored some runs. They scored ten runs in that one game. Clearly, touching the baseball with a bat isn't impossible for them.

The Phillies have to be putting the bat on the ball, right? They've scored some runs. They scored ten runs in that one game. Clearly, touching the baseball with a bat isn't impossible for them.

It's just when they do it, they are grazing or chipping at the ball, rather than slamming or bashing it. Among baseball's 30 teams, ESPN's Mark Simon has calculated that the Phillies are the fourth worst at high velocity line drives.

Their team BA is .242, tied with the Red Sox and Braves and higher only than the Astros, Mets, Mariners, and Padres. So the Phillies aren't hitting much and they aren't hitting hard, yet still they are seperated from the NL East lead by only five games.
