Penn Relays 2017: Day 1 Live Blog

Here are highlights from Day 1 of the annual track carnival at Franklin Field.

Highlights of Day 1 of the 2017 Penn Relays at Franklin Field:

6:28 p.m.: Mainland Regional's Alyssa Aldridge took third place in the girls' 3,000-meter run in 9:50.11. Jessica Lawson, of Corning-Painted Post (N.Y.), triumphed in 9:37.63.

6:23 p.m.: Germantown Academy's Abbe Goldtstein placed third in the girls' mile run championship with a clocking of 4:54.04. Leya Salis, of Bedford (N.H.), crossed the line first in 4:52.95. Abington's Kelly Jawork was 10th in 5:06.09.

6:05 p.m.: The girls' 3,000-meter run is coming up. The local particpants are Cheltenham's MaryGrace Rittler, Conestoga's Dominique Shultz, and Mainland Regional's Alyssa Aldridge.

5:54 p.m.: Germantown Academy's Abbe Goldstein and Abington's Kelly Jawork are preparing for the mile run championship. Goldstein, a Harvard recruit, won the mile at the NYRR Millrose Games in February with an impressive clocking of 4:49.06.

5:29 p.m.: The order of finish in the girls' 4x400 Suburban American relay: Norristown (3:52.96), William Tennent (4:03.45), Wissahickon (4:04.73), and Quakertown (4:09.11).

5:19 p.m.: Neumann-Goretti (Eliza Brooks, Mykala Perry, Ariana Ruffin, and Sydni Townsend) won the girls' Catholic League 4x400 relay in 3:47.14. Next in line were Cardinal O'Hara (4:00.61), Archbishop Ryan (4:10.89), and Archbishop Carroll (4:16.95).

4:37 p.m.: Friends' Central won the girls' 4x400 Philadelphia Academic relay in 3:59.59. Next in line were Springside (4:00.55), Baldwin (4:01.92), Villa Joseph Marie (4:09.19), and Episcopal Academy (4:11.60.).

4:01 p.m.: With an outstanding and dramatic finish from Sydney McLaughlin, Union Catholic (N.J.) came from behind to win a girls' 4x400 relay heat in 3:39.35. Union stormed past runner-up Jamaica's Vere Technical (3:40.67)  at the end.

3:37 p.m.: Cheltenham, Winslow, Neumann-Goretti, Rancocas Valley, Coatesville, and North Penn are among the qualifiers in the girls' 4x100 Tri-State championship at 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Cheltenham set the event record in 46.36 last year.

3:12 p.m.: The Catholic League girls' 4x400 relay is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Cardinal O'Hara will go with Sephora Senestant, Jesikah Boykin, Schola Eburuoh, and Olivia Arizin. Arizin, who helped the Lions win last year's event in 4:03.33, will run cross country and track at Georgetown. Her late grandfather, Paul Arizin, starred for Villanova and the NBA's Philadelphia Warriors.

2:29 p.m.: In the girls' 4x800 large schools heats, North Penn's Uche Nwogwugwu had the 14th best split time in 2:14.47. Penn Wood's Terri Turner (2:14.9) and Elicia Moore (2:14.9) tied for 17th in the splits.

1:44 p.m.: Cheltenham (Bria Barnes, Ciani Fleming, Alexis Crosby, and Chanel Brissett) will take part in the girls' 4x100 Championship of America at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

12:44 p.m.: Cheltenham had the best area showing (45.87 seconds) in the girls' 4x100 large schools relay. Next in line among the locals was Coatesville (eighth, 48.30), Central Bucks South (10th, 48.94), Methacton (12th, 48.98), Cherry Hill East (13th, 49.04), and Central (14th, 49.12).

12:12 p.m.: North Penn qualified for the girls' 4x800 Championship of America for the third year in a row. Last year, the Maidens placed a fourth overall, up from eighth in 2015, in 9 minutes, 2.06 seconds. Three of this team's members - Uchechi Nwogwugwu, Ariana Gardizy, and Mikaela Vlasic - were part of that group.

11:49 a.m.: Penn Wood (9:05.15), North Penn (9:11.65), and Strath Haven (9:12.20)  have qualified for the girls' 4x800 Championship of America at 1:10 p.m. Friday.

11:32 a.m.: Jessica Woodard, of Cherokee High (N.J.), is competing for Oklahoma in the women's shot put. The 5-foot-10 junior, a native of Marlton, was a 2017 NCAA indoor first-team all-American. Her indoor best in the event was a throw of 57-7.

10:28 a.m.: Upper Dublin's Madison Langley-Walker (1:01.98) and Neumann-Goretti's Sydni Townsend (1:02.03) placed ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles. Next in line among the locals were Plymouth Whitemarsh's Taylor O'Brien (15th, 1:02.89), Swenson's Jada Smith (16th, 1:02.92), and Absegami's Joshonda Johnson (19th, 1:06.20).

10:01 a.m.: Sunny skies and warm weather greeted runners Thursday morning. The conditions are good for personal-record times. Today is heavy on the girls' events.  At 10:20, Neumann-Goretti's Sydni Townsend is a threat in the 400-meter hurdles, as are Absegami's Joshonda Johnson and Upper Dublin's Madison Langley-Walker.
