A first for Penn State: No. 1 ranking in ice hockey

The Penn State men's ice hockey team earned its first No. 1 national ranking on Monday afternoon, receiving a program-high 30 first-place votes in the uscho.com poll.

The Nittany Lions jumped from No. 4 last week to the top spot after sweeping a pair of games against Michigan State, 5-2 and 5-3, over the weekend at their Pegula Ice Arena.

Penn State received 964 points, 81 more than they had last week and 23 ahead clear of second-ranked Denver.

Also, the Nittany Lions' 30 first-place votes were the highest among the five teams that earned first-place nods on this week's ballots. Denver dropped from the top spot and received 16 first-place votes. Boston University and Minnesota-Duluth each got one first-place vote and sat at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, in the rankings. UMass-Lowell rounded out the top five, drawing two first-place votes.
