Mitch Williams hates extra inning baseball

POSTED: Friday, March 1, 2013, 6:10 PM

Apparently former Phillies closer Mitch Williams is not a fan of extra inning baseball in the spring.

Williams, a host of “MLB Tonight,” Major League Baseball Network’s flagship program, was none too happy when Thursday’s Mets/ Nationals exhibition game went into extra innings, pushing back the start time of the show.

“Extra baseball in spring training, that’s like extra tooth decay at the dentist,” Williams exclaimed, as he stood up from his seat at the MLB Tonight desk and exited the set.

Maybe Williams had a warm meal waiting for him at home, as the anchors on Hot Stove suggest, or maybe he was simply sick of watching his former rival, the Mets.

Despite an additional inning, the Mets and Nationals ended the game in a 4-4 tie.

as those of us old enough to remember the '93 series can attest, this turkey never did like working for a living

The usual response from a know-nothing "fan." Stick to something you know, like...., well, something.

Actually, the problem was he was over-worked in '93....but I'm sure you could have done better.

Fregosi had Mason in there doing very well, replaces him with a dead arm Williams and Joe Carter hits it out, if I remember right. Fregosi was asked why Williams and he said that's the way we've been doing it all season.

As they say, you dance with the one who brought you. If Fregosi had left Mason in, or gone with someone else, and they'd blown it it would've been worse. And as I recall, there wasn't much left in Tug's arm in 1980. Dunno about Lidge in '08, but the bottom line is in those situations you put your best in, and take your chances.

McGraw's arm wasn't as big a concern as Williams was at that crunch time, if I remember correctly.

Williams relied on a fastball, Tug relied on junk like a screwball.

Everyone knew Mitch was out of gas prior to Game 6. At the bar I where I was watching the game, there were a lot of po'd people when Mitch came in from the bullpen. He had one pitch-fastball-and that was down in the mid-80s in his last appearance. The next day I read where the Jays were really excited when they saw Williams on the mound- they knew they were going to see hittable pitches.

I don't blame Williams- Fregosi hung him out there to dry. And Fregosi got a pass- everything was on Mitch and Fregosi did nothing to take some of the heat off him. For as much a macho man he portrayed himself to be, Fregosi really wussed out

Fregosi actually pulled Mason after getting 1 out in the 8th to go to a lefty, even though Mason had retired 7 straight and looked strong. The lefty, West, walked the only batter he faced. L Anderson came in, got an out, walk, hit batter, out to end the inning, but now the 9th, Jays had the top of the order up. Williams arm was dead, he had been burned out badly down the stretch, he'd lost Game 4 three nights earlier. Only other arm at that point was Thigpen, or maybe a starter (it was the WS).

Mitch Williams is just too funny. Along with Harold, they keep what could be very dull segments alive and funny.

Haimish: "Free baseball" is a term for a game that goes extra innings. You paid for nine, you get more

Mitch's NJ rental property was egged shortly after he single-handedly blew the series. Being the carpet bagger he was, he and his family immediately packed their bags, piled into his truck and headed south back to Texas.

Which is pretty funny since Mitch lives in Jersey and had a business there and coached the AC minor league baseball team and worked at WIP and Comcast on occasion. Another know-nothing "fan."

I guess you didn't bother to read the more intelligent comments before yours or your Mitch hate will never go away no matter what the truth is. Whatever the case may be, the worst manager in recent Phillies history blew game six of the series, not Mitch Williams. Mitch was a stand up guy then and he's a stand up guy now when discussing the game. I guess you would have hung around if your life was threatened? And BTW, the Phillies traded him to Houston after the season, he didn't head south back to Texas on his own.

This POS knew his arm was dead and Fregosi knew this POS's arm was dead!
I will go to my grave hating them!

Fregosi was to blame not Mitch. Unfortunately, intelligence lacking robotic managers from that era are still around today!
