Leafs land Bernier, but Flyers reportedly offered Matt Read

In the first big trade since the NHL regular season ended, the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired goaltender Jonathan Bernier from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Matt Frattin, goaltender Ben Scrivens and a second-round draft pick. The pick will be for either the 2014 or 2015 NHL Entry-level draft.

Bernier, an elite goalie itching for a starting position, has been stuck as Jonathan Quick's backup while playing in L.A. Due to the lockout shortend season, Bernier only played 14 games this year, but has a career record of 29-20-0, with a .912 save percentage and a 2.36 goals against average.

The Flyers were reportedly interested in Bernier, and according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun the team was willing to give up forward Matt Read.

Read has one year left on his three-year contract and will become an unrestricted free agent after next season, so there's one potentional reason Flyers were willing to part with the young forward. Another may be his trade value. His age and skillset make him a commodity that the Flyers would like to get something back for - if they don't plan on re-signing him next offseason.

The Flyers' strong interest in Bernier is also sure to bring up more questions about whether or not Ilya Bryzgalov is staying with the team. Had they acquired Bernier, general manager Paul Holmgren likely would have used the club's second compliance buyout on their starting goaltender.
