Is Philly the sports capital of the world?

Boston teams may have won seven championships in the last decade, but the recent buzz surrounding the Phillies and Eagles has Philadelphia threatening to usurp Beantown as "The Sports Capital of the World."

A poll on ESPN.com indicates, thus far, that our fair city has decisively yanked the status of top dog in the sports world from Boston. Philadelphia led the early head-to-head vote by a margin of 69 percent to 31 percent.

It's not hard to see why many consider Philadelphia to be the current center of the sports cosmos. The Phillies hold the best record in Major League Baseball, thanks in large part to marquee pitchers Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, and the Eagles have become the darlings of the NFL thanks to a recent flurry of big-name signings and bold acquisitions. Along with the Flyers' major shakeup and the sale of the Sixers, the city's teams have become a mainstay in the national headlines.

With the Phillies quite possibly on a World Series collision course with the Red Sox, and with the Eagles and Patriots both popular (if early) Super Bowl picks, Boston and Philly may get the chance to settle this argument on the field in the very near future.

"One championship among all four franchises since 1983?"

    Did you forget about 2008?

Did you somehow miss the Phillies winning the Series 2 years ago?

We're the sports capital because our fans, not our teams (until recently). ESPN has tried as hard as it could to ignore Philly for its entire history, yet we have still forced ourselves into the national consciousness.

I can't stand boston, but the rings don't lie. give credit where credit is due. we are hyped to the rafters at this point. I think the phillies are an easy world series favorite. but the eagles and flyers are nothing more than question marks at this point. interesting for sure, but who the hell knows how they turn out...seriously. then there are the sixers. dumb article.

Coachman, Philly isn't any kind of "wannabe town." Never were. The Delaware Valley is strong with Regional Pride. Besides transplants and those stupid Cowgirls fans were have amongst us, we're pretty hard-core 4 for 4's here. So BLooooooW.

In the past we have certainly not been anything to write home about but after the years of being crapped on this city finally has managers and owners who are making bold moves and dedicating themselves to bringing a championship to this city. We deserve is and we should be sports capital. We are passionate and dedicated so why not us?

As far as a great sports city, Philly is great. Passionate fans. However except for the recent Phillies additon, the teams have not succeeded when it comes to championships. Eagles 1960 (pre Super Bowls), Sixers 1983, Flyers 1974-75. If the poll is about the fans, yes Philly is on of the best sports cities. If it is by recent championships of major sports teams. No.

I have to agree that NOTHING beats winning championships. It is also important to appreciate the realm of the sporting experience. And to not hold championships as the everything, alpha and omega, end-all experience. Not everyday is Christmas, the rest of your life would be a barren hole. If that's what you want, you will be unhappy.

This article is embarrassing journalism. The fans and the Phillies are doing our part and now it's up to the Eagles and Flyers to do their part. There is little hope for the Sixers anytime soon. How does that make Philly the capital of anything??? If you don't win then obviously you lost. Bragging about one championship since 1980 like this is why we're laughed at among other fans. Do I care? No. But I would like to see a Stanley Cup championship before I DIE.

it'll take a few championships to earn that moniker - not more substance-less fluff pieces like this on the dream team or the return of the 4 aces. on the right track, but waaaay premature
