Greg Oden will join the Miami Heat

Just like another famous former first overall pick, Greg Oden has decided to take his talents to South Beach.

The former Ohio State star, who was selected before Kevin Durant in the 2007 NBA Draft, announced on Friday afternoon that he would be joining the Miami Heat for the upcoming season.

Oden, who hasn’t played since the 2009-10 season, had been tapped as one of the best young centers in the game coming out of college, but injury issues have allowed him to play in only 82 total games since his 2007 selection.

Despite looking every bit of 45 years old, Oden is still only 25, and has a great opportunity to revive his career in Miami; if he can remain healthy.

Although his on-court action has been extremely limited, when he has been able to play he has played well, averaging over 15 points and 12 rebounds per 36 minutes of action.

For Miami, the move is low-risk. Oden will make the minimum, just over $1 million, for the Heat next season, and he will have a similar player option for 2014-15, according to Mark Titus of Grantland.

The Heat needed to address the center position, and this is a solid start. It is likely that Oden will start his stint in Miami in a reserve role.
