Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros is out indefinitely after having surgery to repair a torn right Achilles tendon, the team announced Tuesday.

Meszaros suffered the injury during a training session in Slovakia last week, according to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. The surgery was performed Tuesday morning at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.

The loss of Meszaros is a big hit to a Flyers team which was already short on quality defensemen.

Meszaros was plus-6 for the Flyers last season and tallied seven goals and 18 assists.

Looks like another disappointing season on the horizon for the Philadelphia 75ers.

Hockey is all wrists and ankles. I tore my Achilles in high school and was never anywhere near the player I was prior. Sucks Mesz. Sorry man.

It's a shame we didn't get that other guy. What was his name, Weber or something?

Might want to try an offer sheet for Subban. Not sure what the team has to trade--save Read and Rinaldo. (Going to be a rough year.)

Our defense was average at best before this now its average minus.....it is going to be a looooong year as I have been saying all along...we had career years from Hartnell...Talbot..Read....Simmonds....lost Jagr;s offense cant expect them to be as strong offensively this season...Everyone who keeps saying this is an offensive machine may be surprised ...the kids are going to have to come through in a huge way.....our defense is pretty weak and thats saying it mildly and our goaltender just plain stinks...I wouldnt go crazy making any trades it wont matter with BRYZ in nets either way...let the season play out maybe after another brutal year BRYZ will retire and go back to Russia and we can regroup....not a time to make panic moves this team isnt winning anything this year

This a huge hit for the Flyers, Mez won't be back for at least a year - Holmgren is going to have to make a deal to get another experienced d-man. What a disappointment...
