Hugh Douglas headed to trial over domestic assault claims

A lawsuit accusing former Eagles defensive end Hugh Douglas of assaulting his former girlfriend is heading to trial.

Jury selection is scheduled for next Thursday in federal court in New Haven, Connecticut. The trial is scheduled to begin on Dec. 7.

Hope Davila claims Douglas assaulted her multiple times, including during an incident in September in which she alleges he grabbed her by the neck and slammed her against a wall at a Hartford hotel.

The incident resulted in an arrest, but no jail time after Douglas pleaded no contest to misdemeanor breach of peace. Davila, who is being represented by Philly native Gloria Allred, is upset with the plea bargain and is suing for damages for alleged physical and emotional harm.

Douglas denies Davila's allegations. According to a police report, Douglas told Hartford police that Davila's injuries were from "rough sex," but couldn't explain the bruise on her head. His attorney, Corey Brinson, later argued Davila was just upset that Douglas refused to pay for breast enhancements.

As recently as early November, the former defensive end remained defiant, telling Sportsradio 94.1 WIP host Josh Innes he was falsely accused.

"The young lady was drunk and changed her story several times before she got to the story where she said I beat her up," Douglas told Innes on Nov. 6. "She was not being truthful about the story she was telling."

Requests for comment from Douglas weren't immediately returned.

Douglas currently co-hosts a morning sports show on The Game 92.9 in Atlanta. He was fired as an ESPN analyst back in August 2013 after allegedly threatening his former co-host, Michael Smith.
