Early mock drafts have Eagles eyeing Joeckel

POSTED: Thursday, December 20, 2012, 5:10 PM

There’s still a couple months until mock draft season officially begins, but after a season such as the one the Eagles have had this year, it is never too early to start looking ahead.  It is no secret that the Eagles struggled protecting the quarterback throughout the season, so offensive line support makes sense as a main focus for the team.

Several current mock drafts have the Eagles at the #4 spot selecting Luke Joeckel, an offensive tackle from Texas A&M

You may have seen Joeckel blocking for Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football during the season, and if drafted, the Eagles are hoping he can provide the same type of protection for their quarterback, whoever that turns out to be.

Joeckel was this year's reciepent of the Outland Trophy, granted to the nation's top interior lineman, as he helped Texas A&M to the third ranked scoring offense in the country.

At 6'6'', 310 pounds, Joeckel is a physical specimen, and has a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that would make most offensive line coaches salivate.  Joeckel has so much potential in fact, that some analysts have him slated to be selected first overall.

However, other sources such as CBS, and Walterfootball.com, have Joeckel falling to Philly in the four spot, as a player with whom the team could build the future offensive line around.

Jason Peters post Achilles injury is NOT a SURE THING anymore.

When a team has a shot at an ELITE OT, there has to be some compelling reason(s) to pass on him.

Joeckel looks to be a player to build an OL around. 'nuf said.

@rc1000.. Guards historically dont go high in the draft regardless of how talented they are. Womack could be the best offensive lineman in the draft and still slip to the bottom half of the draft because he plays "guard". Next time before trying to be smart. Dont. As far as Star he is the best player in the draft regardless of position. And if the best player in the draft can slip to the 6th round. (Tom Brady) There is definately a chance a player like Star can fall two or 3 slots and still had where the Eagles select. Right now the Eagles are still in position to get the 3rd overall pick so calm down. People dont draft very high. They draft tackles then convert them to play guard. Learn something son.

What hard evidence does anyone have that the 2010 and 2011 drafts weren't Reid's fault and the 2012 draft is to Howie's credit?

Just admit that we don't know who's responsible for what, we don't know who to blame and we don't know how good or bad Howie really is.

Is it so horrible to not know that you just make a baseless guess, convince yourself it's fact, and cry about it under every article that is even tangentially related to the Eagles' front office?

I choose hope. The best case scenario is that Roseman is responsible for the much improved 2012 draft class and that it's a sign of many successful drafts to come. There is no hard evidence to the contrary, so I will hope that is the case until proven otherwise.

They need to get rid of the malcontents and prima donnas. Let's just keep our fingers crossed that it's Jaws or Mayock or anyone-but-Roseman making the picks this year.

Three OTs will go in the top 10 picks. I've been saying Joeckel for some time, but if they drafted down and still got one of the three, then they might be in a better position to get a top CB or S. Some top CBs and Ss will be off the board by round 2.

You know Joekel will be gone before the Eagles pick. Eagles will win a meaningless game and pick 7 or 8 instead of 4.

He's too big, won't fit the Mudd style of gimmicky blocking.

I get hearing it years after the fact when we know the players didnt pan out but must we hear it on every article going forward about who they will draft. Yes, we know, Howie stinks etc la de @*#$ da

We can only hope....Just don't let the accountant, attorney and former JB lackey near the draft room.....He is devoid of football knowledge and being a discople of JB's capology in no way makes him and expert on the qualtity of football players

As high of a pick as they have, it makes sense to take the best player available, regardless of position. I hope Danny Watkins is off the team next season. He is the poster boy of why they have fallen apart. Too many of him, for me, or the team.

BEST PLAYER ON THE BOARD! Only move down if you can still have a Top 10 pick. Watkins was a BUST!! because we reached for him. Take the best player on the board. If thats DT then thats who you draft. Reid has always reached for players and thats why we havent won a playoff game in almost 5years. Its time to stick to the board and stop reaching for players.

Drafting well is about first identifying & rating talent for your draft board. The next step is identifying the key positions (e.g. QB, O line, D line, CB) then drafting the best available player(s) - with an eye for impact players - that fit your system. Drafting "need" is what bad teams do. Scouting & a quality GM are overlooked, especially in the middle-to-late rounds.

At No.4 the Eagles should trade down get another No. 1 and then pick an offensive lineman and a safty. Farther down the draft around 10 to 15 you could fill two big holes. This is assuming that Foles is the answer.

Can you honestly trust Roseman to arrange another draft? The guy stinks, his record atrocious. Watkins alone should get him canned, not to mention Jarrett, etc. He should stay in the fantasy football game and leave the NFL to those who know WTF they are doing.

Eagles still looking for their replacement for Runyan. A series of underachievers, overachievers and guys out of position have plagued this position ever since. This guy could be the next Winston Justice, a guy whose program made him look better than he was. Problem is, you just never know for sure until they strap on a jock and play against the big boys. We do know our O-line is a mess and Herremans may not survive another season at RT. Gotta take a shot if he's there, esp. with a young QB (whether it's Foles or another guy).

They need a tackle more than they need a guard. Mathis and Scott are both playing well, and Herremans can play guard, too. It looks like Kelly might be a player, too. Yu can't be sure how good Peters will be after tearing his achilles. Tackle is the way to go. Defensive backs and another LB is what they need most on defense.

Hard to have too many good lineman. If Watkins and Mathis have to compete for a spot, that's a plus.

Joeckel just as good a player as Star if not better. Star isn't Ngata but he should be considered (if he's even there also). They aren't going to trade for Warmack and get Star, that is just not going to happen. People love to toss out the names they like but without any realism. Shoot if we're being unrealistic , why not just trade for Joeckel and draft Star if we're playing fantasy draft. Maybe we can get Te'o too. And Eric Reid or Vaccaro and Matt Elam as our new safety tandem.Way to get Warmack if you want him is to trade down. This a deep DT draft also so you can get Warmack and another DT if that's what you want (HTML deleted)

I sure hope not. Time to stop picking what you think you need and start to pick the most talented player on the board. If they can they should get the DT from utah. He is the draft's best player and will make our entire defense better. As far as the oline goes.. Draft the Guard from Alabama.. he reminds me of Shawn Andrew's abilities. Trade a couple of picks to get him and if you have those two guys your draft is successful.
