DeSean Jackson fires back at media

POSTED: Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 2:23 PM

Warning: Strong Language

Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson was questioned by ESPN's Lisa Salters last night about whether or not he gave his full effort last season while playing in a contract year.

He told Salters, and the national television audience, this: "I let it get to me, even though I tried not to let it. I was trying to protect myself from getting hurt -- now I'm just giving it all."

So if he is now giving it his all, what was he giving last year?

Many writers and media outlets posed this same question, and Jackson took offense.

Take a look at what he posted on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon:

Rustypop so true these bloggers are sideline chumps mad coz Djax gets paid to play.Yes he has an ego most pro's do.Their created by us fans who treat them like royalty. If he half played and scored alot they/we would be on the band wagon. If he got hurt we would say oh well sorry next. He had to look out for him,I would have looked out for me.The majority look out for themselves....Get over the past place ur hope on this season.

Jeff Lurie once said that sometimes it is simply "apparent" when a player out performs his contract. He said this right after giving Westbrook a new contract. The eagles could have done the same with DeSean, Banner didn't want to. Honestly, he earned no goodwill by playing scared last year. He would have done better by sitting out. DeSean has one career and one (small) body with which to feed his family. It put a young man in a tough spot. I dont feel sorry for DeSean, I just believe a man has to be smart. I believe that privately Reid wanted the deal done earlier for everyone's sake. Here we are - no more Banner.
p.s. DeSean might win over more of the thoughtful and mature fans if he wrote in a thoughtful and mature way.

Tell my wife reality speaks, that you think I'm a closet racist. I lampoon all idiots who twitter, or waste their days on facebook or any social network. In a week, I may comment in the sports section only, about 3-5 times. Does that upset you, the manner I choose to relax and express my opinion? Too bad, and yes, I do chase trolls, and enjoy the practice, it hones my skills at getting to the "truth". My wife is Japanese, but takes pride in her English fluency, as it is my strength as well. I find all the babble of educated people of all type, color, or creed ( Jackson did attend college last time I checked )in texting endlessly, and PUBLICLY, equally laughable when expressed in half sentences or slang. It is hard to take that seriously, but you have a log on your shoulder, not a chip. Chill bro, nuttin prsnl. By the way, if Jackson were out of work tomorrow, you better believe, if your username is REALITY, that any prospective employer wouldn't judge ANYONE ( regardless of color ) on their use of language. I guess to you, English, or a derivative of it, is unimportant, like math skills or reading. Jackson's true ignorance isn't in his speech, but what he is saying. Case closed.

Haha. Seriously, that's your explanation? Case closed? Not even close there, "phillyboy".

First, I don't care if your wife is Japanese, or even if you have a Black friend. When you mock & disparage the way a certain culture speaks who is of a different race than you, that is racism. No two ways about it. What would you think if a person of a different race mocked a certain belief of your wife's - or a certain way she acts, speaks, etc. - that originated from her culture? What would you call that? Because it does happen, and there is a word for that type of behavior...I mean, look no further than these comments. Are you honestly telling me that there isn't racism on these boards. And they're all saying the same exact thing you said in regards to the way DJax talks.

And you talk about texting endlessly and the babble of educated people, yet, you are not even aware that you babble constantly yourself on here. And I don't care how smart you think your sentences are, it's still babble. So before mocking other people, check yourself. Because some of your posts and claims are about as laughable as it gets.

Furthermore, you try to solidify your argument with the assumption that DJax does not know how to talk in a professional matter when the situation calls for it. If indeed DJax were out of football tomorrow, you better know he has the intelligence and capability to get himself a high paying job, (like you stated, he did spend 3 years at the University of California). You don't get to be an elite receiver - that barley touches 5'8" - by being lazy and stupid.

You made the statement that based upon the way DeSean Jackson talks, that he "isn't fit to even earn $12 an hour." Hip hop lingo is in no way, shape or form a negative reflection on one's intelligence and/or work ethic. Your true ignorance is not even knowing what a racist statement you made, and then trying to worm your way out of that racist statement.

Jackson did do a dis-service to his employer and his fan base if he indeed didn't give it his all last season. We regular Joes pull that at our job, especially in these economic times, watch what happens. Jackson's a jerk.

Yeah, reality speaks. You dare call me a "closet racist", you don't know who you're talking to. Knee-jerk reaction by you. I was referring to racism by my comment, I "can see where these comments are devolving". But racism runs in TWO directions, or don't you get it? That is REALITY. All the justifications given, the defenses asserted, all went along racial lines, no attempt to see the BIG PICTURE. What is KARMA? Nothing but a restatement of the law of Physics, that for every action, there is an equal and opposite REACTION. When you put your foot in your mouth, or at least , speak the truth, don't blame the messenger when the message YOU GAVE is handed out. There are people of all races, all creeds, all nationalities, who would figuratively kill for the opportunity given Jackson. To admit he was dogging it for ANY reason, is to spit on his fans, his teammates, and the skills he was God given and honed through blood and sweat. My wife is not caucasian like I am. My opinion is based on my perception , no matter the color, of a fair days work for the pay you earn. His payday was always coming. Patience is a virtue, as is being honest. I applaud Jackson's initial honesty, cringe at his attempt to take it back, then blame an innocent third party for breaking a legitimate story. That my friend, is not racism.

Yeah, I'm calling you a closet racist. There is nothing wrong with DJax speaks, millions of educated and more intelligent people than you talk the same way. Just in case you're not aware of your racism, let me ask you this - Is each and every person that speaks hip hop unfit to earn no more than $12 an hour? I'll wait for your answer on that...

...and don't attempt to divert the subject of my post. I wasn't talking about his explanation for the way he played last season, I was addressing your ignorant statement about the way he speaks and what pay scale he is deserving of.

Seriously dude, who's the genius that is putting their foot in their mouth? Think before you spew your personal feelings on a public page.

By the way, since you're on your high horse about what constitutes selfishness; DJax started his own charity from the ground up and is extremely involved with this charity in a hands on manner...besides your claim of "keeping trolls off of philly.com", what are you contributing to society? I mean with all the time you waste on these boards talking yourself up, I can't imagine you're doing much.

The people trying to rationalize Jackson's behavior are in part responsible for his antics. As long as fans "understand his plight" this sh*t will never stop.

And yes, grammatically speaking apparently he's as afraid of contractions as he is of going over the middle.

Listen, put yourself in his shoes. His career could end in one play. He isnt the biggest of guys. He was extremely underpaid and no financial security. Every single one of you would have played with the same hesitation. And if you didnt, you'd be a fool. If he got a big injury last year, do you think he would have gotten the same deal?

So let me get it right so I know how to handle myself in the future...It was ok for Desean to quit on his team because other people were getting paid more then him who produced less in the past...Now lets say Desean has a lousy year and has 30-40 catches and 3 TD's....I guess with your scenario he should return 6 million of his salary because someone else making less then him was more productive....Do you really think thats what he will do??...No guys like him want it one way thats why to him its all about Desean ..I understand standing up for yourself but not quitting to make your point..as a human being you have to have a little more pride in yourself then that.....Anebriated when I started with my company there were people producing less then me but because they were working for the company for years they were making more thats just life..I knew my time would come if I continued to produce and it did..If I stopped producing and pouted I would have only hurt myself....Phillyboy in NYC at least we see the world the same way

The Eagles have no superbowls to speak of and all you self righteous hypocrites can do is female dog it and moan about DJax. I thought Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and the rest of the Pubes were hypocrites!!!

I can already see where these comments are devolving into something that is "outside" the real issues here. I'm a professional, and I sure as heck make decent coin, but I'm accountable to clients, not a boss. I don't work harder or more, or differentiate my effort based on the client size or account. As a professional, paid or unpaid ( there are many slow paying clients ), I give 100% across the board. The only exception would be where there is an ability to pay, but an INTENT not to pay, without reason not to pay. Jackson was going to get his payday, but if you were the owner of a team, with new rules about free agency, and collective bargaining, you would be an astute businessman too. I don't like Banner ( he had responsibility then ), Roseman or Lurie, but I understand they are business first, then a family. If you want something else, watch HOCKEY, and learn the meaning of UNSELFISH and TEAM ,we not I. Its a good thing DeMe Jackson can run and catch, because with his language skills, he isn't fit to even earn $12 an hour.Flyers 1000, you are dead-on accurate.

SC PHILLY FAN...Jackson was getting paid what the contract HE SIGNED called for him to get paid..It wasnt like he didnt get a raise that was due him.....His time would come once his contract expired but that just wasnt good enough for him..instead he quit on everyone last year ...if thats fine with you then ok but I find it a joke him calling someone else unprofessional...and rustypop 58 maybe you make $12 per hour but I am fairly paid in fact overpaid for what I do but I get paid for performance not for pouting and refusing to do my job

Still not getting it I see... That contract he "signed" was his rookie deal that was paying peanuts compared to what other receivers with his production were getting. The fact that you dont get that is one thing but then you go on about being overpaid on your job and saying you get paid for performance. To use your job as an example lets say 10 of the best employees at your company are getting $60k/yr for their performance and you, while working just as hard and putting out similar(or better) numbers performance wise you are only being paid $6k/yr. Would you still hold true to your "no pouting" rule and just suck it up? chances are you would not.

I liked the hit he put on that guy who was twice his size last nite. Let's face it, he is a child in a man's body. He runs & catches for a living and if he is ever knocked out of the game he faces a bleak future. Cut him some slack. He will grow up at some point and he may help bring Philly a SB in the meantime.

Flyers1000: 1. McCoy never had to through what Jackson did. McCoy may have handled himself in the same way if he didn't get the new contract in May. He may have been the same distraction and possibly held out. 2. Don’t compare a football player to another profession like maybe you or I may have. Jackson was getting peanuts compare to receivers that were way less productive then him. Hey, but it’s nice to know that if someone else got paid 20 times more than you for the same job and was less productive, you would be satisfied with that.

Geez, no wonder I love the Flyers as the best, most unselfish players in professional sports. Our team, to a man, would play with a broken foot or ankle, one eye, if it was team first. There is no "ME" in hockey, well, maybe Cindy and the Penqueens, but not the Flyers. From J-Stroll to DeMe Jackson, it's disgusting to see any half-hearted effort when they make millions. Flyers season and Hockey can't start soon enough for me.

Are you people kidding..he was paid to do a job last year and decided it wasnt worth it to him.....If you or I did that on our jobs we would be gone not rewarded.....he let his teamates..the fans..and his coach down last year..he had a contract and decided not to live up to it....if thats the kind of players you want on your team then thats why this team will never win..the Vicks...Jacksons....are not winners and never will be..Look how McCoy handled himself...like a PRO..keep making excuses for this guy and watch what he does this year. First sign of things going bad for the Eagles and he will be whining and quitting.

Listen even though they make way more money then most of us football is still his job and if your employer was messing with your money there is a slight chance it could affect your performance also. I believe he wanted to do the right thing last year but his mind was elsewhere..... thats all he was trying to state to Lisa Salter!!! love my city and love my team but some of you fans dont use common sense.

I see a few people here at least see the comparison. To me, niether is any better or worse. Its just funny that D-Jax continues to get leeway even through all of his stupidity.
