ESPN's Ed Werder mocks Andy Reid's weight on SportsCenter, apologizes on Twitter

POSTED: Friday, January 4, 2013, 3:57 PM

Ed Werder, who covers the NFL for ESPN, was on SportsCenter on Friday discussing the biggest offseason storyline in the NFL: Andy Reid being named the Kansas City Chiefs' next head coach.

During the course of the segment, Werder pointed out that Chiefs owner Clark Hunt and now-former GM Scott Pioli met with Reid in Philadelphia for close to nine hours, but flew home to Kansas City while Reid remained in Philly.

Why did Reid stay? According to Werder's questionable sense of humor, one potential reason is that Reid may have "put the plane over its weight limit."

Thank you. Thank you. I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

Later, Werder took to Twitter to apologize for his "bad attempt at humor."

I don't have a huge problem with Werder making a joke about Reid's weight - maybe because during his 14-year tenure I have become so accustomed to hearing them that I block them out.

What's really offensive is how unfunny the joke - or attempt at a joke - was to begin with.

ESPN is full of idiots being no more than in-the-know sportsmen. Good grief, what waste of a man's life. —joedog

They get to travel the country and get paid six figures to cover the NFL. You're some guy making snide remarks on an internet message board. Who's wasting their life again?

You'll find many more, even bigger idiots on the philly.com message boards. The lame jokes about Reid's weight are mostly from dimmer teens and frat boys, I suspect, but still.

I was saying all week, Andy will have a job by the weekend. With Jeffy and Howie calling the shots, next year at this time 4 and 12 under Andy will be the good old days.

Don't get your panties in a bunch, that was funny. The truth of the story is the owner wanted time alone to fire the GM.

The KC job almost blew up. KC asked Andy if he ever tried to run the read-option. Andy replied the only Reid option was which buffet to visit that day.

It's out of line for a commentator. Just doesn't come across as funny.

I saw a picture of Ed Werder, or was it an English Bulldog? With a face like his, I'd keep my mouth shut. Eh, my ugly mouth.

It was funny and I love how everyone on the Philly message boards are so much wittier and wiser than the 'national media'...check your bank accounts and your boring lives boys. I don't think any of the so called 'lame ESPN guys' would be trading for your sorry gigs. Jus sayin.

How dare he make a fat joke. I did not get on the plane because I was spending the weekend at Tony Luke's.

Tyrone-The joke wasn't funny....Making fun of someones weight like that isn't funny. If he wanted to say something to the effect of he wanted to stay in Philly to have one last cheesesteak before he left town, that would be completely different.
