Dolphins receiver conducts interview from job at drive thru

POSTED: Thursday, March 14, 2013, 11:32 AM

Miami Dolphins receiever and recent millionaire Brian Hartline was on The Dan LeBatard Show (790TheTicket in Miami) Wednesday afternoon to talk about his recent five-year, $31 million deal with Miami.

As the interview came to a close, the discussion shifted toward the Dolphins' offseason moves, and Hartline admitted he was having a hard time staying up to date on them, especially Wednesday:

"Today I'm kinda busy. I'm working at a drive thru up in Ohio, freezing my butt off."

"You're working in a drive thru?"

"Yeah, you know, a drive thru convenience store?"

'Yeah."

"That's where I work."

Hartline said he and his friend Jesse - whose been running stores like this since he was 15 - bought the store, Smart Stop, in January and business has been pretty good, but they are out of skim milk at the moment.

LeBatard mentioned that he didn't think Brandon Marshall had this kind of supplemental income, and Hartline noted that "Brandon Marshall makes more money than me."

"Hartline, what kind of dream is this?" LeBatard asked, having thought the receiver was joking.

"The dream," he replied.

He's smart. He knows that a NFL career is not a guaranteed thing. It always good to have a fall back plan. I hope the rest of the NFL notes this.

Most of the NBA will be working there after their careers are over. Talk about stupid people!

Headline makes it seem like he's working the drive-thru at McDonald's or something. Big difference between working a drive-thru, and working at the convenience store he owns.

He's going to need more than skim milk to cover the big uptick in drive through business tonight.

While I admire him for still working, it would be nice if he hired a person(s) who is out of work and really needs the money.

This sounds like a really smart man. Wish I had a chance to be an entrepreneur like him.

Good for him. Smart hard working people succeed in many ways. The announcer's reaction reflects poorly on our socity's direction. This incredulous announcer will be doing a story next week on a pro athlete who spends his off-season getting stoned who has been arrested.

It's not easy to hire competent people in small operations like Convenient Stores and Restaurants. For the most part those are cash operations and starting out it's best to do it yourself. The last thing you would want is your employee to know more about the running of your operation than you or before you're able to understand. He's absolutely right to be hands on at least for the first 6 to 9 months.

truthfirst, you can. Sacrifice and Commitment takes you along way. Not everyone is capable of going into a financial institution and securing a loan. Personal sacrifice has to prevail don't take no for an answer and do what you have to, in order to become independent. It's not the bed of roses some make it out to be, but it's rewarding.

The common problem with entrepreneurship is unrealistic expectation.

Be nice to the people you meet on your way up. You're going to meet them again on your way down.
