Brian Dawkins can't understand why the Eagles haven't interviewed Sean McDermott

As the Eagles continue mulling their options at head coach, one name continues to be mentioned to fill the vacancy - Sean McDermott.

As the Eagles continue mulling their options at head coach, one name continues to surface to potentially fill the vacancy - Sean McDermott.

Last week, the Panthers defensive coordinator went on 97.5 The Fanatic and hinted that he love to return to Philadelphia to fill the Eagles' job, but so far the team hasn't shown enough interest to bring him in for an interview.

On Tuesday, former Eagles defensive star Brian Dawkins, who played for McDermott when he was the team's defensive backs coach, couldn't understand why the team wouldn't be interested in interviewing him.

"I'm a little surprised that they haven't at least had a conversation with [McDermott] to see what his plans would be going forward," Dawkins said to Fanatic host Mike Missanelli.

McDermott has reportedly interviewed for the Browns head coaching vacancy, but thus far owner Jeff Lurie and the team haven't shown much interest in their former employee. NFL Network's Albert Breer suggested that McDermott needed to mend some fences with the Eagles' front office before being considered for the head coaching job.

Dawkins, who went to three Pro Bowls under the coaching of McDermott and defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, said McDermott was initially strict but learned with experience to deal with players better.

"He was a a young guy, and sometimes when you're younger and have people in your locker room a little older that you, you might do a little more than you need to as far as demanding and being overly critical on some guys to set the tone of 'you will respect me,'" Dawkins said.

Dawkins also suggested McDermott never really got a fair shot a taking control of the defense before being fired in 2011.

"Sean coming in right after [Johnson's death] and had so much thrust at him right away," Dawkins said, noting Andy Reid never gave McDermott complete control of the defense. "In my opinion he wasn't given the keys to be the coordinator."

As far as coaching candidates the Eagles have interviewed, Dawkins liked Coughlin's experience and said Doug Pederson was a "very smart dude." But he had questions about Pederson's leadership qualities.

"Can he be a coach that can stand in front of a Philadelphia Eagles team and grab that respect?" Dawkins asked rhetorically. "I'm talking about the lack of accountability that has been lacking in that locker room. That's a question mark."

In addition to Coughlin and Pederson, the Eagles have interviewed current offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and running backs coach Duce Staley, as well as Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. They also interviewed Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase, who has since been hired by the Dolphins.
