Braves determine 'screaming savage' is best suited for batting practice

POSTED: Thursday, December 27, 2012, 11:53 AM

For years, the Cleveland Indians have dealt with backlash given their moniker.  Their name alone has been considered outdated and culturally skewed, but their grinning "Chief Wahoo" logo has received the brunt of the frustration, and in recent seasons, the team has started to distance themselves from the image.

The unveiling of this year's batting practice caps from MLB continues this trend, as some teams like the Orioles and A's went with retro looks, but Cleveland persisted with the simple "C."

The league's other Native American-inspired team, however, is going in a different direction.

It's called the "screaming savage."

It's exactly what it sounds like.

The Braves' wordless image of a mohawaked Native American cocking his head back can be difficult to interpret--it is hard to tell whether the man is screaming or laughing uproariously.

But one thing we interpret for sure is that the logo, originally named "Chief Noc-a-Homa," comes from a different time, when this sort of thing was... allowed to... be a thing.

That time was the 1950s to the mid-80s.  And maybe it should have stayed there.

But for now at least, the Braves will be taking BP with the "screaming savage," probably under some criticism, and probably while exchanging uncomfortable glances with each other.

Of course it's a racist logo, but so is the nickname and the logo of the Washington, D.C. football team. And, if Irish are not protesting against Notre Dame, that is their stupidity!

What does librul or conservative have to do with it? I'm a librul and love it. The logo is like 60 or 70 years old. Must say there are many preoccupied with gender, panties or wusses. It's either that or a bunch of little boys venting. It's funny, many of those complaining about politcal correctness would probably freak out over any a preceived slight of a CEO (JOB CREATOR). Political corectness, let's not forget, is in the eye of the beholder.

You're a "librul" and love it. Well, I must say, you represent that crowd well. Obviously a product of the Government run Public School System. By the way, your Public School failed you -- learn how to spell "liberal" and, while you're at it, "correctness" is spelled with two of the letter "r". @ghost, perfect response, same with the other one you posted earlier. Thanks for the laughs.

    Hope your Christmas was great.

@advantasux, you're welcome my friend! It's just too easy sometimes with these progressive ersatz-intellectuals posing as modern day Einsteins. Hope you had a great Christmas as well. Keep fighting the good fight, pal.

If you want to play "spelling and grammar tsar" on an internet message board, you might considering reviewing the rules for capitalization before clicking "post." Or didn't they teach you that in your private/parochial/home school?

Maybe I should tread more carefully here. What if you actually believe that the local soccer team administers our public schools? What if you're really arguing that our public schools might be better administered by the Confederacy?

You might also consider reviewing the use of hyphens, since you seem to be completely confused about whether they're appropriate in the phrase "_____-run ______."

If you want to play czar, you might want to proof-read before posting "might considering reviewing".

Hah! I might, indeed. My point wasn't that I wanted to play grammar tsar, though. My point was that playing tsar is silly, especially in this case, in which the snarky anti-public school correction contained all kinds of grammar and spelling errors of its own.

Good post, Del River Rat. Let's get all excited over a baseball batting practice cap while our elected officials in D.C. drive us over the fiscal cliff.

Here's a simple test to tell whether it's racist. Can you call a team the Alabama Rednecks or the Detroit Blackskins. How about the Philadelphia Polaks? No, well then I guess it's racist. Now before anyone comes on here proclaiming that they are such and such an ethnicity and wouldn't care if a team called itself any of these names, just know that that's besides the point, because the simple fact is you aren't allowed to call a team any of these names. Therefore, you shouldn't be able to call a team the Redskins, the Braves, or the Indians. If you allow one racist name, you have to allow them all.

You just offended non-Polish Philadelphians, non-black Detroit residents, and about 8% of Alabama. There is a big difference between offensive and racism. That hat MIGHT be offensive to some people, but is in no way racist.

Suckers...Philly News bamboozled you again. They look for items with racial slants to suck you in and you all fell for it. I did not read the article but I plead with you to stop reading this online rag as well as the traditional two paper rags.

Is this really a story? From my design appeal side, this logo is hideous and mailed in. They maybe should fire whoever designed this and maybe come up with something a little more ... interesting? maybe?

But racist? Where's mike Ditka. I need a com'on man
