Blue Jays CEO says Halladay won't sign
Mike Potter
For those of you still harboring hope that the Phillies will go all in this offseason and trade for a certain Blue Jays pitcher, we bring you some news courtesy of the New York Post.
It seems Roy Halladay may be inching ever-closer to the door in Toronto.
Blue Jays CEO Paul Beeston told the Post on Friday that Halladay is determined to trade in his Toronto digs for a more promising locale, and indicated that the team will not be able to sign their ace to a contract extension.
"We would like to sign him, he is an original Blue Jay and we have never had a pitcher as good as him," Beeston told the Post. "But he is not inclined to sign with us."
The Blue Jays, until now, had not publicly ruled out the possibility of re-signing Halladay -- although they have made it abundantly clear that he is on the trading block.
With no hope of retaining Halladay when he becomes a free agent after the 2010 season, the Blue Jays have no alternative but to deal him -- either during the offseason or before the trade deadline. As the Post story points out, very few teams have both the prospects and the cash to pull off such a trade.
The Yankees are expected to ease into the trade talks as the offseason progresses, according to the Post.
Halladay is not coming to Philly, stop talking about it. phillysmith
These Philly newspaper writers are horrible. Its so sad and pathetic they can't come up with anything worth reading to write about. They just can't let this Roy Halladay stuff go. GET OVER IT!!! HE'S NOT COMING HERE!! philliekev04

Everybody knows he wasn't going to resign with Toronto! Are you kidding me? This article is telling everyone what we've known since last year! Did you sleep through the summer and fall and just NOW found out about Hallady? WAKE UP! This is ridiculous philliekev04
With record attendance, playoff gate, concessions and merchandise the Phillies have more than enough $ sign Figgens as a free agent, extend Lee and trade Hamels for Halladay. Phils would be unstoppable. Only thing stopping them is NOT WANTING to part with the $. BroadStreet
Nobody's trading Hamels for Halladay. Get a clue. You're calling the Phillies cheap? Have you been asleep for the last few seasons? As for Halladay, not sure why CEO would announce this is and lower his bargaining power. Although, everyone was convinced in July when they put him on the block that he wouldn't re-sign with the Jays so it's really old news. JimG
We are being overun with 12-18 yo morons.....why does the stupid, misinformed youth of today actually think they know anything? Most of you slept thru High School, then elected Obama when you woke up.You should try living for 30-40 years before opening your mouths or typing on a blog. You might just learn a thing or two about sports and life. That is, unless you think you know it all already..... Mark1npt
So Mark, besides insulting the bloggers - how about stating an on-topic opinion? Bobphxville
HAmels and Victorino for Halladay and move Werth to Center and call up Brown or Tucker to play right field Dr. Michael
I meant call up Michael Taylor after the trade, not Tucker. Dr. Michael- Cole Hamels isn't going anywhere. Get a grip. If the Phils do this, it will be Happ, Brown OR Taylor, and some prospects who are lower down on the chain. They could, theoretically, trade Drabek, but they don't sound too eager to get rid of him. If they did trade Drabek, though, it would take Brown and Taylor off of the table. If they could do it for Happ, Brown, and a few lesser prospects, I'd pull the trigger. The problem is what it would do to the payroll down the line. Mike P
- Dr. Mike, you clearly don't know anything about baseball. For starters, the Phillies wouldn't trade Hamels for Halladay straight up, let alone adding Victorino. Secondly, Toronto wouldn't want either of those players. They want young, cheap players they can control (salary wise) for years to come. To rest of the masses, the reason this story is recurring is because it makes sense. The Phillies are one of the few teams in baseball with the prospects and payroll flexibility to make this deal. booman55

Booman-Hamels and Victorino are young, cheap and signed for multiple years. You are the one lacking baseball knowledge. You just contradicted yourself, moron. Dr. Michael
Pay attention Philly fans.. Figgins is wanting too much, settle for DeRosa, who has great stats, stop bashing Halladay not coming here, or he'll believe your hate mail, and not come.. we're looking at 81 sellouts 2010.. at poss. 4 mil in attendance, a slight increase in ticket prices, the playoffs and poss. series in 2010, and all you got to do is complain ???.. Hamels is our future, Lee and Halladay are priceless, as everyone seen Lee was in 09'.. imagine having two.. with Hamels, Happ and Blanton, dreams and wishes do come true... get onboard folks. and enjoy the ride... Come on Amaro, show your true colors... become the Gillick twin, and go get this guy.. without losing the farm.. Pa Bryon
"We would like to sign him, he is an original Blue Jay and we have never had a pitcher as good as him," Beeston told the Post. I guess this idiot doesn't remember Roger Clemens pitching for Toronto. Forgedaboutit, we don't need Halladay. We have a good staff with Drabek im the wings. This kid is the real deal and needs to be promoted to the starting rotation. brinkmang- Dr. Michael, Hamels signed a long term deal last year. It wasn't cheap. Victorino is arbitration eligible this year. These are the exact type players the Blue Jays don't want. The want players that are years away from arbitration and FA. I hope you're not a real doctor. booman55
Hamels signed a SHORT-term contract last year through 2011. Yes, Victorino is FA eligible this year. Don't see either of these 2 being traded. The Phillies will likely try to get Victorino to agree to a something like 3 years 18 million this off season. Or just continue to offer him arbitration until he can leave. Boethius- Everybody, chill. Halladay has pitched over 2,000 innings in an 11 year career. Whoever gets him (read Yankees) will get 2 yrs. max out of a 5-6 year contract. It's not worth any of the Phils prospects or Hamels or Happ to get this guy. John621
Well, Hamels is signed for an average of 8 million a season over the next 2 years, so he's not ULTRA-cheap. i douwldn't give up Victorino though. Hamels and a prospect would be enough anyway, if the Jays are okay with paying Hamels that much (still a savings over Halladay and would ease fan discontentment having an establishsed pitcher). Comment removed.- Thanks Pa Bryan.
- If we're dreaming, I'd rather see Lee, Halladay, Hamels, Drabek, and Happ. I'd love to see if Drabek has what it takes now and replace Blanton's mediocrity. Maybe you could get a true reliever for him +. This would allow Savery to mature and come up with some seasoning.
- I would move Happ in a deal for Halladay. With Lee and Hamels at the top of the rotation, having a 3rd lefty can be counterproductive. I'd also not offer Blanton arbitration. Lee, Halladay, Hamels, Martinez, Moyer/Drabek as starters. You could also have Kendrick, Park, Bastardo and Carpenter as starting options should injuries arise. booman55
It's simple..the Yankees will get him, and they will win the World Series because they buy all the best players. GPG13
It's time to get over the Halladay rumor and move on. Mike Kotyk
This isn't even a real topic. Halladay will never be a Phillie. Get over it. Amaro already said publicly that he's not trading Hamels. Dr. Michael, are you kidding me? You really want to see Werth in Centerfield?? Gimmie a break, he can barely cover Right....And you want to bring up Brown and make him a starter immediately with no fall back plan if things don't work out? Stick to what you're good at, Mike. Pretending to be a Doctor on public forums, and leave the baseball talk to real fans who have been following this team for longer than two years. mikestef100
Also booman55.....Here is a little baseball 101 for you. Now remember this, because it's important. You can NEVER have too many left-handed pitchers. Repeat. Never. To say having Happ is counter productive is absurd. Being a left handed pitcher will never work against you. It's ALWAYS an advantage. I sincerely hope you weren't trying to say that the Phillies may have to deal with the problem of having too many left-handed starters. mikestef100
If Halladay goes to the Yankees who do you think will win the world series next year? That's why the Phillies need to get him. Their window is the next two years. misteripi
Halladay is over rated..he did not pitch well in the final months of the season...let the Yankees have him.... merlinknghts
He's not coming here, and we don't need him here. Phillies need another strong bat. Biggest need is to correct the mess they've made at 3rd base. Besides, Halladay is already being fitted for pinstripes, which is why he's not resigning with the Jays. dapmman
IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT, MAKE THE DEAL REAL.GET HALLADAY,GIVE UP A LITTLE,GET THE BEST 3RD BASEMAN,AVAILABLE( FELIZ ) BACK IN THE FOLD,AND GO FROM THERE. t_darb_56
Comment removed.- Get ready for Adrian Beltre as our 3rd baseman, he will be the right price at the right time-johnnyu
