Former Temple star Khalif Wyatt could make 76ers' roster

After his prolific college career, the nation was well-aware of Khalif Wyatt's scoring ability. The guard from Norristown can put the ball in the basket.

It has been Wyatt's passing ability, however, that has been pleasantly surprising throughout his time with the 76ers at the the Orlando Pro Summer League. That has helped the NBA-hopeful gain the attention and admiration of new general manager Sam Hinkie.

Although Hinkie's approval doesn't guarantee a roster spot, it is telling that Wyatt was able to earn the admiration of the GM in such a short time span - especially considering that Wyatt's style isn't the most appealing from an analytics perspective.

Wyatt was not one of the 60 players selected in June's draft, but he has an excellent opportunity to end up on the Wells Fargo Center sideline next season.

The Sixers. are looking to keep costs to a minimum while building for the future. They need guard play and offensive output, two areas where Wyatt can contribute.

After trading away all-star Jrue Holiday, the Sixers badly need to bulk up their back court, and do not want to break the bank while doing so. It is assumed that the Sixers will sign a veteran point guard at some point this offseason in order to aid Michael Carter-Williams' development, but otherwise filling out the roster with some rookie contracts seems like a smart move for future flexibility.

Wyatt may not be ready for major minutes, but he could come in and provide some relief at the point guard position, while giving the organization an opportunity to see what he can do.

In addition to guard play, the Sixers desperately need some scoring, as they were tied for last in the league in points per game (93.2) last season. And that was before they traded away their leading scorer.

While the organization seems to be sacrificing the upcoming campaign with an eye on the 2014 lottery, the team still needs to score some points this season.

Wyatt will need to continue working on his playmaking and conditioning, but he could potentially contribute on the offensive end, providing the Sixers with a little scoring spark.

The Sixers are expected to struggle this season, so they might as well take the opportunity to see what prospects such as Wyatt can offer an NBA team. If he keeps improving upon his passing and continues to round out the rest of his game, don't be surprised to see the former Owl on the Sixers' roster come the fall.
