Bettor's Guide to Replacing Reid

If fired, who will replace Andy Reid?
Jon Gruden
Chip Kelly
Brian Billick
Bill Cowher
Sean Payton
Rob Ryan
Perry Fewell
Winston Moss
Todd Bowles
Tony Dungy

There are few things more exciting in sports than speculating on a man’s replacement before said man is even fired. With Eagles coach Andy Reid off to a 3-6 start (and mired in a five-game losing streak) in the 14th season at the helm of the franchise, there is no better time than the present to handicap the favorites in the race to replace him:

(To read Jeff McLane's story on the candidates to replace Andy Reid, click HERE.)

Jon Gruden (2-1): You all are aware of Howard Eskin’s report earlier this week. Gruden’s undying love for any player to ever play on Monday Night Football could make it difficult to make training camp cuts however. This guy could be your new head coach.

Chip Kelly (7-1): The only college coach on the list, Kelly’s Oregon offense rattles plays off quicker than Reid can say “Time’s yours.” You’ll rarely have to worry about a Kelly offense using a needless timeout.

Brian Billick (12-1): Billick’s name has not been mentioned too much in the past few years after being fired as the Ravens’ coach in 2007. The current FOX color guy was an offensive coordinator before being hired by Baltimore, but hardly showed a knack for finding quarterback talent with the Ravens. Would he be a good fit for Nick Foles or another young passer?

Bill Cowher (15-1): Cowher’s tenure with the Steelers served as the model for what we all hoped Reid would be this season - finally triumphant in his 14th year as the head coach of the same team. Fair to question if he would be as driven as a coach after spending the past six seasons in television. But what a scowl!

Sean Payton (20-1): Want to put money on this one? Jonathan Vilma, Gregg Williams and Scott Fujita don’t know anything about it. Payton likely stays with the Saints.

Perry Fewell (20-1): Not only would hiring Fewell help the Eagles as well as hurt the Giants, the current New York defensive coordinator has seven games of head coaching experience, having served in an interim position with Buffalo in 2009 after Dick Jauron was fired. Fewell also has a Super Bowl ring, and that’s all that counts, right?

Rob Ryan (25-1): If only to improve the crop of vans in the Jetro lot on Sundays, the Eagles should poach the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. Ryan was a much ballyhooed hire in 2011, but the Dallas defense has not been particularly impressive in the season-and-a-half since his arrival.

Winston Moss (30-1): A guy the Eagles probably should have hired as their defensive coordinator prior to last season, Moss is the Green Bay Packers’ inside linebackers and assistant coach. He was reportedly considered for the Oakland head coaching position this offseason, but would the Eagles consider hiring someone who has never even been a coordinator at the professional level?

Todd Bowles (35-1): If we’re considering Bowles, why not Juan Castillo? Oh yeah - because neither has shown they deserve the shot.

Tony Dungy (40-1): Hard to see Dungy coming out of retirement, but if he did return to become head coach of the Eagles, would Michael Vick remain with the team? Dungy served as Vick’s mentor following his release from prison in 2009.

Marty Mornhinweg (100-1): Just kidding.

Norv Turner (200-1): Sorry, can’t help myself.

Why would anyone want Gruden? He caught lightning in a bottle with Tony Dungy's team and then had a worse record than Reid. Have you heard him on MNF? The guy's lost it.

Most of the names seriously mentioned are not sound choices or even available for one good reason or another. This team needs a fundamental football man and disciplinarian who has the authority from the get-go to kick butts and make major personnel changes. Greg Schiano is disliked by his players but he is winning and winning is the name of the game.

There are few things more exciting than speculating on a mans replacement before that said man is even fired.... Really dude... You have zero class and are a clown. What is more exciting than dancing on a guys grave before he is buried after he committed 14 years to the city. You are pathetic and sad for that comment. At some point you should try to be a bigger man and if it is about getting read and a headline or creating controversy at some point you should be above this. Do you ride past car accidents to feel better about your life? There are way more things exciting verses watching my eagles suck. I think a touchdown would be more exciting than this.

PLEASE~ Howard Eskin!!! That bozo hasn't been right about anything this year. He must have some serious dirt on somebody to still be reporting.

i dont care who is the next coach as long reid is gone. this season is the final straw for reid. this whole unit ;coaches and players is reid's doing. poor drafting ,bad talent evaluating , poor clock management and bad game adjustments are all reid's doing.the national media is still hyping reid as a good coach but
everyone in this area knows what a fraud he is. if he gets another head coaching job i guarantee he wont get total control of the team.

Kelly or Gruden...I won't mind either way. The others...no thanks. I still remember when they hired Reid out of nowhere, though, because Lurie was impressed with Andy's notebooks.

Those are my two top choices as well. I'd like to see Gruden first because of his previous NFL experience. Those who keep posting that Gruden won with someone else's players are blatantly ignorant of the real background facts. Tampa Bay gave up valuable first round choices to Oakland to hire Gruden. Gruden replaced the fired Tony Dungy as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002, via a high-stakes trade that included Tampa Bay's 2002 and 2003 first-round draft picks, 2002 and 2004 second-round draft picks, and $8 million in cash. In addition, Gruden was handicapped in subsequent post-Super Bowl seasons because of the high draft picks sacrificed by the team to acquire Gruden, along with salary-cap issues and failed draft choices FORCED upon him by GM Rich McKay (with whom Gruden had a bitter relationship) which severely limited Gruden's ability to field the teams he wanted after that successful Super Bowl-winning season. With no emerging talent in the fold and no money to afford replacements, the team was decimated by injuries to many of the Super Bowl stars, including Joe Jurevicius, Greg Spires, Shelton Quarles, and (cornerback), as well as acrimony with highly-paid veterans such as Sapp, Keyshawn Johnson and Keenan McCardell. Those salary cap issues were the reason the Bucs first choice, Bill Parcells, backed out of the deal. Chip Kelly would be my second choice.

Mold1103 nailed it. GM first let Howie handle contracts salary cap as others have said. Then hire coach.
Then they both can pick OC DC and then fire Wide 9 Washburn. Wide 9 stands for " run through me whenever you Want to."
