New York Daily News suggests Yankees trade Granderson to Phillies for Ruf

POSTED: Monday, October 22, 2012, 10:56 AM

The dust hasn't quite settled in New York after the Yankees were swept out of the playoffs by the Detroit Tigers.

One media outlet is suggesting that the Yankees make a deal with the Phillies, trading Curtis Granderson, a power hitting center fielder who would fill a need for the Phillies, for Darin Ruf, the reigning double-A MVP.

Granderson has a $13M option for 2013, making him affordable for the Phillies, while Ruf is a 26-year-old career minor-leaguer with no real position on the Phillies. In winter ball, Ruf is hitting .276 with four home runs in eight games.

Here is what John Harper of the New York Daily News wrote over the weekend:

It's not that Granderson can't cut down on his strikeouts and get back to being something closer to the player that finished fourth in the 2011 MVP voting. It's just that I don't believe the Yankees are going to commit to a long-term, highly-expensive deal to keep him after 2013, so the time is right to trade him.

Granderson makes a lot of sense for the Phillies, who desperately need power, as well as a center fielder, and they're still very much in a win-now mode, trying to cash in before their high-priced starting rotation gets too old.

...

At age 26, Ruf is not really a phenom, having developed his power gradually after being a 20th-round pick out of Creighton. The Phillies are converting him from first base to the outfield, and scouts believe he can play a serviceable left field.

His bat could be valuable to the Yankees in a part-time role in 2013, if he proves ready, and eventually he could become a mainstay in the lineup.

The Phillies might be reluctant to deal one of their few highly-touted prospects, but some scouts, pointing to his high strikeout total (102 K's in Double-A) aren't sold that Ruf will be able to put up big numbers against major league pitching. And Granderson could be a long-term answer in center for the Phillies if they're willing to commit financially.

So what do you think? Would you make the deal?

No...His short, quick swing and rare power can not be traded from this organization. Also, to simply call him a "26-year-old career minor-leaguer" is making him sound like he has been stuck in the in the organization for many years...his was just drafted in 2009, ignoramus.

This sounds like a plant by the Phils to prepare fans for Ruf being traded. Put out a few rumors about phantom trade speculations, many obviously not good for the Phils. Then trade him for someone who fits more of the bill as to what the Phillies really need. This lightens the outrage of the fan base about them trading away their darling Ruf who the organization doesn't want to have to bring up and play. Hope I am wrong but this stuff happens all the time. The same with the A-Rod for third rumor, it is so bad but it sets up a Frandsen trade for someone the Phils management really wants. I said at the end of the season they might both be gone but hope they stay and get the chance to play. Time will tell.

Granderson makes sense for the Phils but for other teams also. Could the Yanks get more for Granderson than another team's #20 ranked prospect? The answer is yes. If the Yanks wanted to trade Granderson out of the AL, they could look to the Reds, Nationals, Mets, Cubs, Braves, perhaps Pirates, Padres and Giants. Let the bidding begin. Does anyone think the Phils' offer of Ruf would be the best?

No way. We need to give these young guys an opportunity here and it keeps the payroll down so we can put that toward pitching or short term contracts that add power. Yankee's already see they don't want to pay him after 2013 so why would the Phillies? Cmon man

Are you kidding me? Granderson and his .236 batting average, tons of strike outs, and...$13 million salary (affordable according to who?). Ruf had a slow start in winter ball, but 4 home runs in 8 games? Add that to his 10 game profile in Philly and Ruf is still mashing the crud out of the ball and hits righty. Last thing this team needs is another lefty who leaves tons of runners on base and hits below .250. Ruf will be a serviceable left fielder. Ruf is under team control for the next 4-5 years and the next 4 seasons won't cost $13 million. Ruf has a short, compact swing and stays on the ball. He won't strike out once every 3-4 at bats and has right handed power that this team has missed since the defection of Jayson Werth. Stop all the nonsense and start writing about realistic scenerios. Is it that slow on the journalism front?

Completely agree. Why the Phillies would want a 3 time All-Star center fielder who has finished in the top 10 in MVP voting twice in the past 6 years, averaging a .350 OBP, 30+ HR, 85+ RBI, 105+ runs and 4+ WAR per season over that span is beyond me. Far better to have a soon-to-be 27 year old with a month above AA ball and no defensive position to speak of.

When thinking about free agency, I believe that quite frequently the best moves for an organization are the ones they never made. Aaron Rowand is a great illustration of a player who got a max offer and completely stunk it up in San Fran. Hunter Pence is another player that ended up being a horrible deal. We traded away prime prospects for a player that (although seemed very valuable during a playoff run) but ultimately in the larger picture, hurt the Phillies. Conversely, when RAJ gave Howard that monster deal when he never needed to shows how mismanaged this team is...It's not even like RAJ got a bargain, and yet 2 years early!!

My point is that if RAJ is not replaced soon, the Phillies will suffer for a lengthy period of time. We're already stuck with Howard for a long time and we keep gutting our farm system. What's going to be left of the Phillies by 2017?

The Phillies were built from within. We're clearly not that Yankees because we are committed to staying under the luxury tax threshold (and really the Yanks are getting there too in that regard). But, the Phillies need to understand value and player worth. Who in their right mind thought Howard was worth $25 mil per year??? Are they not watching what we are???

I commend that Boston Red Sox for gutting their team and starting fresh...something the Phillies should consider.

Uh, huh...and how'd that work out for Boston!

So, would you give a guy who hits 45-50 HRs, bats .275-.300, has 130-145 RBIs, and an OPS over .800 for the first four years of his career a mega deal? Because that's Ryan Howard. 20-20 hindsight has made you a genius.
