Report: Flyers agree to offer sheet with Nashville Predators' Shea Weber

A report by TSN hockey writer Darren Dreger overnight broke the news that the Flyers have agreed to terms of an offer sheet with Nashville Predators star defenseman Shea Weber.

Dreger reported that the Flyers' offer sheet is a 14-year, $100 million contract. Nashville has seven days to match those terms.

"Nashville was working on a trade and its [sic] believed several deadlines passed before Flyers grew tired of waiting," Dreger tweeted. "Weber signed offer sheet."

Weber is one of the most coveted players in this summer's NHL free agency period. The 6-foot-4, 234-pound defenseman also brings a scoring touch to the blue line, having recorded 19 goals and 30 assists last season.

If Nashville does not match the offer sheet, the Flyers would have to give up a significant haul of draft picks - possibly as many as four first-round selections.

"I'm told a number of teams were in on a possible Shea Weber trade," Dreger tweeted. He then followed that up by tweeting: "I may have made an error on compensatory picks. Depending on aav, it could be 2 firsts, 2nd and a 3rd round pick if Preds don't match."

The "aav" refers to a player's average annual value, which translates to the salary cap hit a team takes from the player's contract.

Awesome! What is the chance Nashville matches? Can they match, then trade immediately? Love the Flyers aggression.

This sounds to me like Weber wants out of Nashville. This guys would be exactly what the doctor ordered after Pronger's career-ending injury. He would be worth all the money. The contract is rumored to be extremely front-loaded, so don't worry too much about its length. Great move by Homer. Now let's wait what the Preds are going to do.

Interesting. 26 years old, and perhaps one of the last 7+ year contract offers put out with the NHL - Union negotiations this summer. Nashville is under the salary cap floor, and just lost Suter, so I'd think they would be inclined match, but...

bird14 - No, he can't be traded once he signs an offer sheet.

The Flyers really are one of pro sports gutsiest franchises and easily the best in this town. You can criticize their approach, but they make deals for the present that never completely sacrifice their future. They don't reward players based on past performance and they will never write off a season 4 months before a season begins.

That said, I can't see Nashville letting Weber get away for a relatively minor haul of compensation, especially after an off-season in which Suter got away.

Weber has stated he would not sign with Nashville if they didn't sign Suter, but Suter bolted for Minnesota. Nashville is $30M under the cap which is still under negotiation in the new CBA negotiations and can match the Flyers offer. The Flyers on the other hand, would be up against the cap again. The Flyers could wait until Weber becomes a UFA after this season and make him an offer, but they might not be able to fit Weber under the NEW parameters of the salary cap and the proposal to limit the length of FA contracts that are on the table for the new CBA. The obvious solution would be for Nashville & the Flyers to work out a trade and avoid the uncertainty of a new CBA, and grandfather in this contract for Weber. Weber would be the best UFA defenseman and best UFA on the market next season. That might be the only way for the Flyers to fit Weber under the salary cap as it stands now. Would Nashville want a player who has stated he will leave as a UFA or would they work out a trade or settle for draft picks as compensation? This could turn out to be the biggest signing/trade of this off-season. Weber is a top 2 d-man, and with Pronger's return in doubt, would fill the HUGE void on the Flyers defense.

    ... i don't know ... he's a stud - but giving up a bunch..
possibly losing 4 #1 picks - flashbacks of Lindros debacle...
minus players and what 15 million or so...
which eventually set up the Avs as a premier team and holders of the cup twice over...
    - decent article @yahoo with Bryz - he sounds very grounded, as in Earth grounded...
    - does anyone know if

The Lindros trade was NOT a debacle! It turned into a mess in the end, but before that Lindros lifted the Flyers out of the worst period in franchise history and back into prominence.
