Temple linebacker Wyatt Benson was just announced as a nominee for the 2013 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. The team is generally considered the most prestigious off-the-field honor in college football.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team pays special recognition to a select group of football players who have made a commitment to improving the lives of others in their respective communities.

In 2012, Benson, a senior, played in all 11 games, making two starts at linebacker. He earned 2012 Big East All-Academic Team honors.

Off the field he distinguished himself by reading to Philadelphia school children during Read Across America Day; volunteering in the Southwest Airlines/Rondald McDonald House Plane Pull Fundraiser; and working with more than 500 kids as counselor at Rhawnhurst, Baker and H-Park Football Camps.

This season there are a record 151 nominees for the team. The final roster of 22 recipients – culled from 11 players from the NCAA Football Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and NAIA – will be announced in Sept.

Past members of the team include Super Bowl winning quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning, and Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Tim Tebow.
