Matakevich is ECAC defensive rookie of the year

Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Defensive Rookie of the Year for the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Owls tailback Montel Harris and punter Brandon McManus joined the freshman on the ECAC all-star team.

Matakevich finished the season with 101 tackles to before the first freshman in school history to record 100 or more tackles. He also had three tackles for a loss, three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

Harris rushed for 1,054 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. The fifth-year senior set Temple and Big East single-game records of 351 rushing yards and seven touchdowns against Army.

McManus averaged 45.1 yards per punt. The senior produced a career-long 68-yarder against Rutgers. Fifteen of punts were longer than 50 yards.
