Penn State defensive end Deion Barnes gave folks at Penn State and Temple an answer.

The Philadelphia native tweeted Thursday afternoon "I'm staying at Penn State, so the phone calls and speculation can stop."

However, Temple had reached out Barnes about transferring this week.

“I can tell you this: We are interested in Deion Barnes, the kid from Northeast,” an Owls source said Thursday. “But again, is there mutual interest? I know we are trying to at least see if he is at least interested [in transferring]. I don’t know if there is any mutual interest there.”

Penn State players are free to transfer without having to sit out after the NCAA hit the Nittany Lions with a $60 million sanction, a four-year football postseason ban and forced the Lions to vacate all wins dating to 1998.

Barnes, a 6-foot-4, 248-pound redshirt freshman, is battling for Penn State’s backup right defensive end position.  As a senior at Northeast in January, 2011, Barnes chose Penn State over Georgia.

Bob Lichtenfels, the East regional manager for Scout.com recruiting service, said Arizona State is also recruiting Barnes.

Penn State tight end Garry Gilliam told The Inquirer Thursday that he's also been contacted by Temple. Like Barnes, the redshirt junior said he's staying at Penn State.
