Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is scheduled to be interviewed Monday night for the vacant Temple head coaching job, sources told The Inquirer.
Bowles, who also has coached in the NFL for Miami, Dallas, Cleveland and the New York Jets, was a defensive back for Temple from 1982 to 1985.
Bowles, who took over as Eagles defensive coordinator on Oct. 16 after Andy Reid fired Juan Castillo, is atleast the sixth candidate to interview for the Owls job that opened up after Steve Addazio left Tuesday to take over as head coach of Boston College.
According to sources, others to have interviewed thus far include New York Giants offensive line coach Matt Rhule, Miami defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio, Temple defensive coordinator Chuck Heater, Ohio State running backs coach Stan Drayton and former Florida International head coach Mario Cristobal.
Like Heater, Rhule and D’Onofrio have Temple ties. Ruhle coached with the Owls for six years, five under Al Golden and one under Addazio. D’Onofrio was Golden’s defensive coordinator before following Golden to Miami. Heater worked with Addazio at Florida and Temple.
Drayton, a former assistant at Villanova, is known as a great recruiter. Cristobal, who led FIU to bowl games in 2010 and 2011, was fired last week after his team posted a 3-9 record.
The Owls lost another assistant Monday when tight ends coach Frank Leonard left to join Addazio at Boston College. Leonard, who came to Temple after serving as an assistant with the St. Louis Rams, was a teammate of Addazio at Central Connecticut State, and the two coached together at Western Connecticut.
Addazio also has hired offensive coordinator Ryan Day and offensive line coach Justin Frye from his staff at Temple.
This comment has been deleted. Vomit Man #1- Speaking of losers, how're you doing, pukeyboy?
mike l - Poor vomit man finally made it out of his parent's basement after that humiliating loss Nova suffered to Temple. I'm surprised he's able to comment.
Mikey Fresh - Just curious, who exactly in Temple's athletic dept. saw what the Eagles defense has done this year, specifically the secondary, and came the conclusion 'Hey, let's hire this guy!'
Bowles as HC and Jaiquawn Jarrett as Defensive Coordinator. ghostofozark
stikolaboloni, isn't the answer obvious? joeseagle
Bad move. Penfold18
Take him please! Call Mike Singletary to be our DC. He built SF into a top rated defense. NC Eagle Fan
Poor guy...AR screws him with that job and now hopefully he will stay away from the Big East disaster.....Not his or Temples fault that the Big Least is a failure.....He deserves better... nuggett
So you blame the dumpster fire that is the Eagles defense on the guy who came in at the end of the season? williemccoy
Maybe the guy will be a better college coach. urbnasty
With Babin and Washburn gone the "D" has already improved. They were a cancer. I believe Bowles is a good coach and so did alot of football people. ggg444
Look at his stint as head coach at Miami Dolphins he won after HC was fired. He probably has better talent at Temple than with the Eagles,I am rooting for him even though cronism will prevail and Rhule will be picked. PHILLY76
Might turnout to be just what Temple needs I hope it works out for him if he takes the job. And I agree with ggg444. @NC Eagle Fan - Even though I like the thought of Singletary in Philly as DC you can't blame Bowles for the mess they dropped him into. realtruth
Bradley deserves the job. Penfold18
