Temple and Rutgers announced today that they have agreed to a four-game football series.
Both schools are presently members of the American Athletic Conference. However, Rutgers is leaving the AAC for the Big Ten next season.
Temple will host the Scarlet Knights on Sept. 11, 2021 and again in Sept. of 2023. The Scarlet Knights will host the Owls on Sept 19, 2020 and Sept. 17, 2022.
The schools have met 35 times before. Rutgers holds a 20-15 series advantage. Temple (0-3, 0-1 AAC) plays at Rutgers (3-0) on Nov. 2.
“We are excited to announce a four-year agreement to play Rutgers in football starting in 2020,” said Temple interim director of athletics Kevin Clark. “This is a great series for fans of both teams, and it will continue a geographic rivalry, which is big part of our scheduling philosophy.”
“I know about the Temple-Rutgers rivalry, but hadn’t had a chance to be a part of it,” Temple coach Matt Rhule said. “This year will be my first year going against them and I know it’s great for both schools to compete against one another when geographically we are so close. I was disappointed to see that they were moving from our conference, but excited now to see that they are back on our schedule in a few years.”
