Temple quarterback Chester Stewart and cornerback Kee-ayre Griffin are suspended for Thursday’s season-opener against Villanova for a violation of team policies.
Owls coach Steve Addazio wouldn’t disclose why they are suspended. And Temple declined to make the players available to the media's interview requests.
“I’m not going to talk about it,” Temple coach Steve Addazio said during Monday’s media luncheon. “So don’t ask me any questions about it.”
The first-year coach added the suspensions are a private team matter.
Stewart had been battling junior Mike Gerardi and sophomore Chris Coyer for the starting quarterback position. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound fifth-year senior started the first seven games en route to playing in nine games last season.
Stewart completed 72 of 135 passes for 842 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. His not playing in the season-opener shouldn’t come as a surprise.
He took very few to no snaps with the first-string offense in the Owls’ three separate preseason scrimmage.
Griffin started 10 games last season at cornerback. The 5-foot-11, 188-pounder had 51 tackles, an interception and three pass breakups.
