Temple football coach Steve Addazio will not be leaving for Rutgers, sources tell the Inquirer. (Patrick Semansky/AP)

Unless something drastically changes, Steve Addazio will remain Temple’s football coach, according to sources.

“He’s not going to Rutgers,” said one source with inside knowledge.

Multiple reports have put Addazio among the leading candidates for the Scarlet Knights job, which opened up Thursday when Greg Schiano was hired by the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Addazio replaced Al Golden at Temple in December 2010. The former Florida offensive coordinator led the Owls to a 9-4 record and a 37-15 victory over Wyoming in the New Mexico Bowl in his first season at Temple.

This is at least the second time in three months that Addazio was linked to a coaching vacancy. He was mentioned as a possible candidate for the Illinois job after Ron Zook was fired in November.

Addazio, however, stated that he wasn't interested in the Illinois job and wanted to remain in the Northeast, close to his hometown of Farmington, Conn.

PTL! Awesome Addazio should stick around for a few more years, but he will eventually get snapped up by a "Big Time" program or take UConn to the next level.

Why would you want to go to Rutgers when the big east is about to fall apart

I will not relax or praise any entity until the Rutgers successor to Schiano is introduced. Why doesn't Bradshaw insist that Steve just jump before the press for 5 minutes (no questions if that will expedite things) and say "I am not going anywhere, Rutgers or any other school"? Yes I know this is a vital final 3 days with recruits but it would take 5 minutes (he could call in from the road even). Bradshaw yesterday simply said "Addazio is our coach (True when said)" and "he feels this is a great incoming class of recruits ". Also possibly true. But no one connected with Temple especially Addazio has vigorously denied the very strong Rutgers smoke, hopefully not leading to a (h)ire.

We went through this with Golden..UCLA..nope. Cincinnati, nope. Miami...see 'ya. This could have been shut down hard and fast as TU/Addazio did with the Illinois feeler. Still don't feel this is over.

the Golden thing was different. The U is a legit Natiaonl Champion program, the only jobs that rival theirs are in the SEC or Texas, maybe OSU too. Adz jumping ship for Rutgars? give me a break... not gonna happen.

jbzuck...Again my concern is why doesn't Temple or Steve Addazio simply shut this down with a vigorous unequivocal denial to the media?

I'm not saying Rutgers=Miami but for Addazio it would be a perfect fit on his turf with a much higher salary than he is getting now. Rutgers would have to overpay but gosh, folks do whacky things for money, yes? You say no way and that's cool. I'm still worried. Not convinced at all by the carefully-worded partial denials by Bradshaw, the nothing at all from Addazio.

Pompey's insider knowledge is usually reliable, and he knew Bernard Pierce was going to the NFL. Addazio has a great recruiting class and he'll want to honor his commitments to those player. I agree that Rutgers should seek a whole coaching package (PSU) at this late hour. National signing day is Wednesday, so Rutgers needs to move fast.

Steve will be better served to stay at Temple. Rutgers is just a touch better regarded - and at his age if he wants to coach at a MAJOR program putting 2 more years in @ TU & then follow Golden's path. Going to Rutgers essentially puts him a year behind where he is right now.

Addazio will stay at Temple because he WILL make Temple a BIG time program.

Temple is on the verge of becoming an excellent college football program. Another 9 plus win season will attract 4 and 5 star recruits. Addazio has the personality to get the cream rather than uncover the sleepers. TU alumni need to get on the bandwagon and make sure he stays. Forget the conference but beat those Ohio teams and sooner than later the Linc will be packed for football in Phila.

It's going to get harder for Daz as he needs to build the team with his own recruits at a time when being a BCS school is increasing in importance. If he can lead the owls to another 8+ win season and get a signature victory (eg penn state, ND) he'll be gone to a top tier program. The real focus needs to be on developing a roadmap to becoming a Boise of the east and continuing to get folks in the seats.

The owls need to develop an athletic and academic roadmap to a BCS conference (ie ACC) which may include a stop at another more reputable non-BCS conference. We're already competitive in the major and Olympic sports as evidenced by wins over the BE champ uconn two season ago and the spanking of maryland this season. The men's and women's hoops programs speak for themselves.
