Temple coach Matt Rhule named junior quarterback Connor Reilly the team’s starter for the regular season, which begins on Aug. 31 at Notre Dame.
Reilly, who has never started a collegiate game, beat out Clinton ‘Juice’ Granger for the starting job. Granger, a fifth-year senior, started the last two games of last season at quarterback.
“It was a hard decision for us,” Rhule said Thursday at the team’s Media Day inside The Pavilion, home to Temple’s new indoor practice facility. “But we’ve made it now and we’ll move forward. We feel like they both can lead the team. They have both done a good job. But Connor is the guy we’re going to move forward with and let him start this first game.”
Rhule let Reilly know that he had won the job during a meeting earlier in the day.
“I felt a little nervous going in there,” Reilly, who quit the baseball team to focus solely on football, said. “He told me I was the starter, have fun, ease into and just have fun playing football next Saturday.”
