Owls sloppy in first preseason scrimmage

Steve Addazio was far from pleased.

Temple’s first-year football coach didn’t like what he saw Saturday at the Owls’ first full scrimmage of the preseason.

“I thought that there are too many turnovers,” Addazio said of the scrimmage that was mostly closed to the media. “Young guys putting the ball on the ground. Older guys throwing the ball up for grabs. I don’t want to see turnovers.”

He added that he was also bothered by the Owls' cadence issues.

“We have to learn how to grab momentum by the throat and drag it with you a little bit,” Addazio said. “As opposed to letting it bowl you over. So we haven’t clearly learned that yet, how to handle adversity and overcome that.”

Junior quarterback Mike Gerardi took all of the snaps with the first-string offense. The former walk-on started last season’s final five games.

Sophomore quarterback Chris Coyer worked elusively with the second unit. Senior quarterback Chester Stewart, who started last season’s first seven games,  did not participate in the scrimmage.

“He is a little dinged up, a little strain,” Addazio said of Stewart, who started the first seven games of the season. “So it wasn’t in his best interest to [play] and it gave us a chance to look at some of the younger guys.”

When asked what type of strain Stewart has, Addazio said, “I don’t talk about injuries. … But maybe a groin.”
