Owls eyeing N.J. recruit

The Owls have had a very strong recruiting year by all accounts. They’ve gotten commitments for the class of 2014 from players that in the past they probably wouldn’t have been in play for.

So who is the next guy that they’d like to add to what is turning into a decent haul for first-year coach Matt Rhule and his staff?

The guy they’d really like to hear from over the next week or so is Montclair (NJ) junior defensive end Austin Stevens.

Stevens is 6-4, 245-pounds and has a frame that looks like he can put on a lot of weight. He’s explosive off the line and has been very difficult to handle with his outside rush.

According to Rivals.com, the Owls are one of six schools heavily involved with Stevens. The others: Buffalo, Kansas, Maryland, Old Dominion, Rutgers and Stony Brook.

The Owls will greet fans at the Jersey Shore on Saturday, July 20.

The Temple University Alumni Association kicks things off with a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. at Joe's Fish Company (25th Street and the Boardwalk, Wildwood, N.J.) at Morey's Piers. Cost is $10 per person and $5 per person for Young Alumni (2003-13 graduates) and includes fresh local seafood appetizers and soft drinks.

The football team heads to the Wildwood Boardwalk (at Juniper Avenue) to meet and greet fans and sign autographs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Hooter the Owl, Temple cheerleaders, and the Diamond Gems dance team will also be on hand. Fans will receive autographs, posters, giveaways, and more as they gear up for the upcoming 2013 season. This event is free to the public.
