New Jersey safety becomes Temple's 17th commitment
Montclair High School (N.J.) middle linebacker Stephaun Marshall gave an oral commitment to play football at Temple Tuesday night. The 6-foot-1, 189-pounder will play strong safety for the Owls.
The rising senior and Rancocas Valley offensive lineman Raymond Korang, who also committed Tuesday, are Owls coach Steve Addazio’s 16th and 17th commitments for the Class of 2012.
"I think Temple got a great one," Montclair coach John Fiore said of Marshall, who recorded a team-leading 118 tackles last season. "I think he is extremely underecruited.
"He is the first junior that I named as a captain. So that should tell you something about him as a player."
After Marshall announced his plans to attend Temple, Fiore said he received calls from Connecticut, Syracuse, Maryland and Boston College. All four schools informed the coach that they were planning to offer scholarships.
Marshall’s decision to accept Temple's offer came one day after Montclair teammate Avery Ellis, a linebacker, committed to the Owls. Ellis, who recorded 80 tackles last season, said he's excited to remain teammates with Marshall.
"It shocked me for the most part that he committed Tuesday," Ellis said. "But I was really excited. I knew he would commit. I was just shocked that he committed one day after I did."
Temple is also recruiting Montclair running back Kahlif Herbin as a slot receiver.
