Layton, Smith garner AAC honors

Temple football players Paul Layton and Nate D. Smith earned recognition from the American Athletic Conference for their play over the weekend.

Layton, a senior punter, was named Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 45.3 yards on seven punts in the Owls’ 33-14 homecoming victory over Army. Layton ranks second in the AAC in punting average at 45.1 yards per punt.

Smith, a sophomore linebacker, garnered honorable mention honors for his play in the Owls’ first victory of the season.   Smith had nine tackles and returned a 19-yard fumble for a score in the second quarter.
