There might come a time when Juice Granger plays quarterback at Temple in place of Chris Coyer.

So Owls coach Steve Addazio figures it’s better to get him ready sooner than later.

“So, obviously, we are heading into this week, and they are both taking a bunch of reps,” Addazio said in preparation for Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh. “Chris will be our starter.

“And as we will roll into that game, as everyone’s job here, you got to go out .. play at a high level. You got to compete. And if things aren’t going well, we got to, you know, do what we need to do. And I think that’s at every position on our football team.”

Coyer has struggled this season, completing just 61 of 115 passes for 727 yards and seven touchdowns to go with three picks.

One of his worst performances came in Saturday’s 35-10 setback to No. 18 Rutgers at Lincoln Financial Field.

The redshirt junior completed 7 of 14 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown to go with an interception and two fumbles. Coyer threw incomplete passes on seven of his final 10 attempts. The dual threat carried the ball 16 times for 30 yards (1.9 yards per carry).

He was pulled when his second fumble was returned for a touchdown with 10 minutes, 51 seconds left.

Granger completed just 1 of 3 passes for 7 yards on Saturday afternoon. One of his attempts was nearly intercepted. The junior had two carries for minus-4 yards.
