Temple middle linebacker Stephen Johnson was named the Mid-American Conference East Division defensive player of the week Monday.

The fifth-year senior finished with a career-best 16 tackles and his first sack during Saturday’s 42-0 victory at Ball State.

A first-year, full-time starter, Johnson leads the Owls with 52 tackles on the season. The 6-1, 230-pounder also has two pass breakups and forced a fumble.
