Fitzpatrick moves from QB to slot receiver

Temple coach Steve Addazio has been extremely tight-lipped in regards to naming a starting quarterback.

The one thing we do know is that Jalen Fitzpatrick is definitely out of the running.

The freshman, who was recruited as a dual-threat quarterback, lined up at slot receiver during Saturday’s scrimmage.

“We got to get him on the field,” Addazio said. “He’s too good of an athlete.”

The former Harrisburg High standout missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury.

“We moved him over there for now,” Addazio said. “We are going to get him involved in special teams and all those other things, because he really is a high character, great-worker guy. I like him.”

Junior Mike Gerardi, sophomore Chris Coyer and senior Chester Stewart are battling for the starting position.

Offensive line set: Addazio said Pat Boyle (left tackle), Derek Dennis (left guard), John Palumbo (center), Wayne Tribune (right guard) and Martin Wallace (right tackle) will be his starters on the offensive line.

“I think all those guys were they are now to where they are going to be as the season grows, I think you will see great improvement with them,” Addazio. “They are getting experience quickly.”

Breakaway Johnson: Even though he was competing mostly against second- and third-string defenders, walk-on running back Darius Johnson looked good Saturday. The junior, who played at Overbrook High and Valley Forge Military College, broke open several long runs.
