Fitzpatrick, Dixon shine during Temple scrimmage; injury updates

Fitzpatrick, Dixon shine during Temple scrimmage; injury updates

Here are some observations from Temple’s intrasquad scrimmage today at the Edberg Olson practice facility:

The defense started out looking much better than the offense early on, holding the first unit offense without scores for multiple possessions.

The offensive highlight of the morning session was provided by wide receiver Jalen Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick had a good day at his position, catching a number of passes in the middle of the field. However, his best moment came late in the practice.

With the offense backed up against the 1-yard line, Fitzpatrick beat freshman defensive back Sean Chandler down the right sight of the field, pulling in Connor Reilly’s pass around the offense’s 40 and scampering the rest of the way for what would have been a 99-yard td.

Earlier in the day Fitzpatrick gathered in a touchdown pass from quarterback P.J. Walker. The play went for about 20 yards (the Owls did not keep stats).

… Chandler got his fare share of snaps with the first unit defense and looked pretty impressive. His top moment came when he stepped in front of a pass by Walker and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.

… Running back Hassan Dixon had a nice day. Dixon found running lanes up the middle of the defense on a number of occasions. His best went up the middle for a touchdown of about 20 yards.

… Linebacker Nate D. Smith has had a quiet camp so far. Smith has been dealing with some tightness in his back that has slowed him some. Still, he did come up with an interception during the scrimmage.

Rhule is making it a point to get his younger players playing time. He went out of his way to mix in quite a few freshmen with the ones on both sides of the ball.

Overall he was pretty happy with the way the scrimmage went.

“I may be looking for a little bit more energy,” Rhule said. “I know it’s been a grind camp, but we want to get some more energy.

…. There were a few notable injuries at camp. Redshirt junior Will Hayes was carted off the field after being hit in the leg. Rhule indicated that he hoped the injury was not serious. …. Redshirt freshman Jabo Lee hurt his knee in pre-practice drills and was on crutches during the scrimmage. Lee missed most of his senior year in high school due to an ACL injury. … Freshman receiver Matt Eaton suffered a sprained right MCL on Friday and was also held out of practice. He and Rhule both said he should be back soon. He rode a bike during the scrimmage.
