Temple's Fran Dunphy is regarded as the most underrated college basketball coach in America, according to a CBSSports.com poll.

Dunphy received 14 percent of the votes from a poll of more than 100 college coaches. St. Mary's Randy Bennett finished second at 9 percent.

"I appreciate my peers thinking I have a clue about what I'm doing," Dunphy told CBSSports.com after learning he was voted the most underrated coach in America. "We're lucky to have the jobs we have."

The Delaware County native has compiled a 444-228 record and 14 NCAA tournament appearances over a coaching career at Temple and Penn. This past season, he guided the Owls to a 24-8 record and their first outright Atlantic Ten Conference regular-season title since the 1989-90 season.

He teams stink in the NCAA tournament, that's why he doesn't get respect. As a Temple alum, I'll take Brad Stevens (Butler), Mark Few (Gonzaga) or Shakka Smart (VCU) over Fran Dunphy any day...

I hope you aren't an alum of the Temple U. I graduated from

Dunphy doesn't get any respect? No not from geniuses like you. Nationally he is one of the most respected coaches and even more importantly men in the country. He epitomizes class.

If he enjoys good health he is a lock to be Temple's (shared with Penn) third Hall of Fame basketball coaching inductee. And when you get a chance read what Temple's second HOF coach, the great John Chaney, thinks of Fran Dunphy.

You take whomever you want I'm proud to have this man as the face of Temple University basketball and beyond. And I for one don't give a durn that his teams haven't won (yet) in The Dance.

They will and when they do it will finally quiet people like you because then you'll have nothing to criticize.

100 college bb coaches (plus John Chaney) versus a poster named adthomas? I'm going with the coaches on this one if that's ok.

    GO OWLS!!

I am an alum of Temple, and I'm so sorry you have such low expectations for our basketball program and don't care that Fran Dunphy has been a pathetic failure in the NCAA tournament, unlike the coaches I mentioned and of course the legendary John Chaney. I couldn't care less what some coaches who aren't fans of our basketball program think of Fran Dunphy or anything Temple. Were those coaches the ones suffering from watching our team embarrass themselves against USF this year under Dunphy ? Or how about that egg against Cornell in 2011? Didn't think so. When Fran Dunphy wins more in the NCAA tournament (instead of the 1-5 he's been with Temple), he'll get the respect he deserves. Until then....

One and Done(fy) is a class act and wins alot in the regular season but has one win in the tourney. The NCAA tournament is where great coaches prove themselves and dunph has been a disaster. Additionally, he's been out-recruited for every blue chip recruit he's gone after while at temple. With all genuine respect to the voters....I see him as a very good coach but certainly not 'the most under rated'.

The NCAA record is frustrating, no doubt, but some things aren't all on the coach. What happened against UCF was all on our top 2 guys on the court. They're performance was unexplainable. As far as losing out on top recruits, Temple has always been a program that gets very good but not top guys and develops them individually and as a team. Chaney was a quintessential example of that. And while he took the owls to 5 final 8s he also lost some tournament games he shouldn't have. Dunphy IS a class act for sure but does need to start winning in the NCAAs. He knows it. At least he's carrying on to make Temple the 6th highest wins school in the country, but I do wonder what the season records will be once Temple's in the BE. Go Owls.

No question Dunph is a good coach, class guy, runs a quality program and is a fine representative for TU. Unfortunately, it all boils down to success in the NCAA tourney and his ability to recruit higher tier players to TU. The postseason has been rocky and largely a failure under Dunph. It seemed like he just sat back and clutched his water bottle last year while his starters tanked and failed to capitalize on a horrid first half by their opponent. He just seems to struggle in the glare of the NCAA tourney. He will need to overcome this. In terms of recruits, he has landed some good players and the hope is that the new facilities and the recent move to the Big East will enhance his ability to land the bigger fish recruits. The guys we seem to be landing right now are more mid-major targets than they are blue chippers.

Dunphy has been a great regular season coach, but his lack of NCAA success is a definite negative. He's also thrived in a bit of an underdog role thus far in his career. Now that Temple is in the Big East, there is nothing underdog about the program. Let's see how they respond.

BTW, those same 100 coaches voted Jay Wright as one of the top 10 most overrated coaches. Just sayin'

Dunphy is class. We need some more NCAA accolades though. GO COACH. GO TEAM. GO TEMPLE. GO OWLS.

Its gonna get real ugly real fast if he doesn't start bringing in 4+ star recruits in the next couple of years. Last year's team ran out of gas down the stretch playing an A10 schedule. I'd hate to see what happens when they bring the same level of talent to the Big East.

The NCAA record is of course frustrating, but the tournament is not the end all be all of coaching prowess. Mike Davis has a FF appearance. Is he a better coach?

They ran into a better team against MSU, a hot James Harden with ASU, a buzzsaw and a criminal underseed with Cornell. Just bad luck. And the new Big East isn't all that much better than the A-10 so they're not in for a rude awakening or anything like that.

DUNPHY IS A CLASS ACT. THE QUESTION GOING INTO THE BIG EAST IS HOW WELL CAN HE RECRUIT TOP TIER TALENT. TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE BIG EAST, TEMPLE NEEDS TO LAND TOP RECRITS

@adthomas80, stop telling people you're a TU grad, you're a dope! Dunphy is a well respected coach and deservedly so!
