Dawn Staley, the former Temple women’s basketball coach, will have an award named after her, the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia announced Thursday.

Beginning this season, the club's Dawn Staley Award will honor the nation’s best Division I women’s guard.

Staley, now the women’s coach at South Carolina, is a three-time Olympian. The Dobbins High product was the college national player of the year in 1991 and ’92 while at Virginia. Staley, a former point guard, went on to become a six-time WNBA all-star.

“The Dawn Staley Award will allow for the consistent recognition of athletic achievement tied to one of the most decorated women’s basketball players from the Philadelphia Public League,” said Michael G. Horsey, founder of the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia.

The club was created in 2008 to recognize outstanding male and female high school and college players from the city's Public League.

The Dawn Staley Award winner will be picked by a select group of sportswriters and broadcasters, who cover women’s college basketball. It will be announced during the Final Four weekend (April 7-9). The award ceremony will be held subsequently at the Union League.
