Baltimore sack machine commits to Temple

Nik D’Avanzo, a rising senior at Baltimore’s Archbishop Curley High School, gave an oral commitment Tuesday to play football at Temple.

The 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive end becomes the Owls’ fifth recruit in the Class of 2013.

"I went there about three weeks ago for a football camp and I did really well. ... I went up there [Tuesday] to see the campus a little bit more. I just loved it," D'Avanzo told the Baltimore Sun. "I love [Temple’s] Steve Addazio, the head coach. He's the kind of coach that will get me to the next level."

He finished with 80 tackles and seven sacks for the Friars in 2011. D’Avanzo picked Temple over Hampton, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Monmouth, James Madison and Old Dominion.

Really stole him from some competition... This is fine recruiting for the MAC but in the Big East this recruit is just a gamble. We need to start bringing in a few big fish to build around.

Glad to see we're landing some good sized recruits but we're going to need to get at least a handful of studs to compete in the Big East. I'm still waiting to see some kids picking the owls over PSU, Pitt or some other legit rope tier programs. Keep going Daz!

Steve Addazio--three time NATIONAL recruiter of the year. He'll get whom TU needs to get. My recent (but large) concern: he must try to factor in a kid's character and values if that is possible with teenagers. 2 TU Football recruits (1 from last season) have just been arrested and charged with serious-sounding crimes. I just hope the higher the caliber competition is does not mean the more tempting it might be to overlook some warning signs. I don't want Temple to become like State Pen (fine program riddled with miscreants at almost every level).

    GO OWLS!!

TYPICAL Temple HYPE but no big deal. Kid was only recruited by DII type teams. Any big names recruited...NOPE! Quality players? NOPE! Quality character kids that (God forbid will even do well in class) will GRADUATE? NOPE! Temple football will come in last in the Big East.

Phased if you had the character to pay up on the bet, I would wager dinner at a restaurant of my choosing the Owls won't be last. However, since you're just a spineless troll with no character I would never expect to collect on that bet. Peace to you and I hope you're able to move past your anger

I'm not seeing any "stars" next to these kids names, as in 3,4 or(wouldn't it be great?) 5 star recruits. They're sizeable and probably real good athletes, but these ratings do mean something. I'm sure Daz and his staff can develop players but Temple needs to start with some high rated players too. The results of these recruits will be seen 2-3 years from now. Y'know, Golden really was a good recruiter (22 guys given a chance in the NFL the last 2 years) and last year was obviously based on Goldens recruiting with, yes, good coaching from Daz. But its a bit mystifying to see some of the kids he's getting. Go Owls.

Would love to know what Daz and our coaches see that other BCS programs miss when it comes to a kid like D'avanzo. But I'm all in.
