ANC's Gilbert commits to Fairfield

Academy of the New Church senior Marcus Gilbert gave an oral commitment Wednesday to play basketball at Fairfield University.

The 6-foot-6 swingman was leaning toward playing at Temple or St. Joseph’s. He even felt good about his unofficial visits to both campuses. The Smyrna, Del., resident, who is blessed with incredible athleticism,  apparently couldn’t wait any longer for the Big Five schools to offer him a scholarship.

"Temple and St. Joe's, it appeared, were trying to keep in touch  [ in case they couldn't get] the guys they had ranked above him," said, Chuck Gilbert, Marcus' father. "He decided to go where he was really wanted."

The 18-year-old accepted Fairfield’s scholarship over offers from Boston University, Duquesne, Iona, Fordham, Rider, Albany, James Madison, Rice, George Mason, Wagner and Iona.
