As expected, Kevin Newsome’s head has been spinning during the first three days of Temple’s football camp.

“He just got here. A lot of information,” Temple coach Steve Addazio said of the former Penn State quarterback.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder arrived at Temple Friday after completing courses at Tidewater Community College in Virginia.

The Temple Owls are saddened by Sunday’s unexpected death of Garrett Reid, the eldest of Eagles coach Andy Reid’s five children, who also had a connection to Temple.

Garrett Reid’s brothers Britt Reid (a graduate assistant coach) and Spencer Reid (redshirt freshman tailback) are members of Temple’s football team.

After Monday’s practice, Temple coach Steve Addazio, quarterback Chris Coyer and running back Matt Brown were asked how the team is dealing with the loss.

Finding a competitive edge is a high priority as Temple prepares for its first season as a Big East member since 2004.

“How do we make ourselves different? We talked a lot about that in there,” Owls coach Steve Addazio said Saturday.

Returning just eight starters, Temple is expected to have lack-of-depth issues.

Without providing an explanation, Temple coach Steve Addazio canceled Sunday's scheduled media availability after football practice.

The cancelation could have something to do with the passing of Garrett Reid, the oldest son of Eagles coach Andy Reid.

Garrett Reid's brothers are members of the Temple football team. Spencer Reid is a redshirt freshman running back. Britt Reid is an offensive graduate assistant.

Fall camp officially opened Saturday morning at Temple, as the Owls worked on fundamentals during a two-hour practice in helmets and shorts.

“That’s what it is on Day 1. You can’t get much more done,” Temple coach Steve Addazio said of sticking to the basics. “You are not in pads.”

As a result, Addazio wouldn't single out any players for their individual performances. He wants to wait until Monday when the team starts practicing in shoulder pads.
