Big East Power Rankings: Week Four

I was wrong.

After a 36-27 loss to woeful Maryland on Sept. 8, I said Temple was still better than Connecticut, Syracuse and Pittsburgh. But that was before Pitt stunned then No. 13 Virginia Tech and UConn beat the Terrapins' team the Owls couldn’t defeat.

Temple will make its fifth visit to Beaver Stadium in seven seasons to play Penn State on Saturday.

That’s more road trips to any other place during that time.

But the Owls (1-1) aren’t complaining.

Temple wideout, Deon Miller, left Edberg-Olson Hall on a stretcher Thursday.

The junior, who is overcoming a viral infection, was taken to an area hospital after repeatedly cramping up after practice.

Temple coach Steve Addazio was not made available for comment.

Temple’s third-string quarterback, Kevin Newsome, took snaps at wideout during Wednesday’s practice.

The Penn State transfer approached the coaching staff about moving to the wideout or safety position earlier this week. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior is still listed at quarterback even though he is expected to see time at wideout.

Newsome had hoped to battle Chris Coyer for the Owls’ starting quarterback position. He never got the opportunity.

Temple’s offense could get some much needed reinforcement for the Penn State game.

Owls coach Steve Addazio didn’t rule out tailback playing Montel Harris for the Sept. 22 game at Beaver Stadium.

“I hope so,” said Addazio, whose Owls (1-1) are in the middle of a bye week. “I think so. I don’t know yet.

A.J. Sattinger, a senior at Countryside High School in Clearwater, Fla., gave an oral commitment Tuesday to play football at Temple.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound tight end is the Owls’ 13th commitment for the Class of 2013.

Sattinger chose Temple over scholarship offers from Ohio, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Jacksonville State, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb and Georgia State. He also received interest from Florida State, Vanderbilt, Duke, Florida International and Georgia.

Big East Power Rankings: Week Three

Temple didn’t play particularly well in Saturday’s 36-27 loss to Maryland.

Despite that poor showing, the Owls (1-1) are still better than Connecticut, Syracuse and Pittsburgh. That’s why they remain fifth in the updated Big East Power Rankings. But things could change with a poor showing at winless Penn State on Sept. 22.

Temple’s 36-27 loss to Maryland on Saturday was marred by miscues. As a result, the Owls can’t feel good about themselves heading into a bye week with a 1-1 record.

With 13 days before the next game, here are five things Temple needs to focus and work on before facing Penn State.

1. More offensive balance: The Owls have several five-receiver offensive sets. Yet, it’s hard to tell. Temple has run the ball 74.7 percent of the time through two games. That works against teams unable to stop the run.  Penn State held Virginia to 32 rushing yards on Saturday,  proving that it is not one of those teams.  The Owls must find ways to throw the ball.
