Temple true freshman Kyle Friend is listed as the starting right guard against Penn State on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
The 6-foot-2, 300-pounder will start in place of sophomore Jaimen Newman, who has been battling injuries since training camp. Friend saw action as a reserve in the first two games.
A young team, the Owls (1-1) will have 19 freshmen and sophomores on their two-deep depth chart against the Nittany Lions (1-2).

Temple safety Justin Gildea knows first-hand what Penn State football means to Central Pennsylvanians.
Growing up, the Altoona native attended countless Nittany Lion games with his father, Stephen, a PSU alumnus.
"It’s kind of like a cult type of thing," the senior said. "Everybody from around that area all they talk about is Penn State. Every Saturday is Penn State football. Penn State this. Penn State that.

Temple’s 36-27 loss to Maryland on Sept. 8 was marred by miscues. As a result, the Owls (1-1) went from being recognized as a team on the rise to a squad with major problems.
But that was 11 days ago. After a bye week, Temple has had plenty of time to improve before facing Penn State on Saturday.
Here are five things that must happen for the Owls to beat the Nittany Lions (1-2).

Brandon McManus, a senior placekicker/punter at Temple, was one of 11 Football Bowl Subdivision players named to the 2012 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.
The award recognizes college football players for making a difference in their communities.
McManus volunteered for 11 community service events during the 2011-12 academic year. This marks the third consecutive year and fifth time since 2003 that a Temple player was named to FBS Good Works team.

Temple recruit, Tyler Haddock, is scheduled to attend Saturday’s Temple-Penn State game at Beaver Stadium.
“My mom is buying me tickets,” the Montour High senior defensive tackle said. “I will probably be in the nosebleeds.”
The 5-foot-11, 275-pounder gave the Owls a commitment this summer after backing out of a commitment to Kent State.

Temple coach Steve Addazio was asked about Penn State defensive end Deion Barnes.
An interviewer wanted to know if the Northeast High product is the type of player the Owls need to keep in Philadelphia as the program grows.
Like most of the area’s high-profile recruits, Barnes didn't consider Temple while being recruited by some of the nation's top college programs.
