Maryland escaped with a 36-27 victory over Temple on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Owls (1-1) nearly battled back from a 23-point first-half deficit.

Temple quarterback Chris Coyer completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Fitzpatrick to close the gap to 29-27 with 7:04 seconds left.

But Maryland quarterback Perry Hills responded with 38-yard pass  to Stephon Diggs to the Temple 13-yard line. Three plays later, Justus Pickett scored a 7-yard touchdown run to extend Maryland’s lead to nine points with 2:51 left.

On the ensuing possession, Coyer’s fourth-down pass was intercepted by Demetrius Hartsfield.

The junior completed 7 of 18 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns in the setback.

Maryland improved to 2-0.

Crushing loss in what should have been a statement game. Top to bottom debacle.

Neither team looked like a BCS school. Temple was weak in the trenches but the bigger issue was the complete lack of discipline in all aspects of the game. If the owls show up as a well coached team they can put up a respectable showing against PSU but this team isn't beating a mid-tier BCS school with this talent. That said....go owls.

Settle down, haters. Temple hasn't recruited as a Big East member yet. This is a young team with MAC players.

This was a horrible loss. I don't know whether I should cry or get really really angry. I think BMJ's post said it all.

On the Coach A thing I just want to say that I did read all the Gator Nation stuff when he left Florida and after last year's Owls season and not to say what Florida did I thought those people were nuts. Clearly those posts warned me there would be days like today. I just hope this doesn't become a habit.

We weren't prepared period. That is the players and the coach. We pay the coaches.

I don't like the defeatist attitudes guys. Remember how good it felt to see Temple demolish Maryland last season? Losses are part of the game and we're 1-1 2 games in the season. Still like Temple's chances up at Penn State. Everyone knew this season was going to be a difficult transition period and a big step up for Temple due to the conference switch. Still too early in the season. Regroup, get it together, and bring it the next game. GO TEMPLE. GO OWLS. I'll always root for you. You'll never walk alone.

I'll always cheer and root for Temple Football. No matter what. You know why? Because it is the team in the sport of college football that represents the city I live in and the university that I attended.

How about for one minute all you critics think about the fact that these football players are 18 to 22 year old young student athletes who are not getting paid a salary to go out everyday and beat their bodies physically in this game while dedicating 15 hours of 24 hours everyday to football and schoolwork so all of you can go enjoy an afternoon of leisure after they have poured blood, sweat and tears everyday of their lives into this sport. Come on let's think about these young men and stop being so critical, they are not professional athletes, they are student athletes! Shame on you for some of the nasty things that you post. These young men could be your sons, how would that make you feel?

Mostly all if not ever sports analyst, commentator, and the odds maker considered Temple favorites to win. No game is a give me. Move on and prepare for the next game. Rock and roll on Temple.

Temple is a university with a current enrollment of over 40,000 students and with nearly 300,000 alumni living throughout the globe. Temple University is the 26th largest university in the United States. Win and the crowds will come. This was an early saturday afternoon game with kickoff starting at 12 pm and tailgating starting around 7-8 am. I expect larger fan turnouts at home games against Rutgers (possibly the largest home fan turnout of the season), USF, Cincinnati, and Syracuse. Those games should draw a substantially larger amount of fans than the 23,000 fans that showed up at the Linc for this Temple- Maryland game.
