Newsome takes snaps at wideout

Temple’s third-string quarterback, Kevin Newsome, took snaps at wideout during Wednesday’s practice.

The Penn State transfer approached the coaching staff about moving to the wideout or safety position earlier this week. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior is still listed at quarterback even though he is expected to see time at wideout.

Newsome had hoped to battle Chris Coyer for the Owls’ starting quarterback position. He never got the opportunity.

The Portsmouth, Va., native arrived on campus the day before training camp because he had to complete courses at Tidewater Community College in Virginia. As result, he was way behind Coyer and reserve Juice Granger.

Newsome left Penn State in August 2011 to transfer to Tidewater C.C., which does not have a football team. He was denied a waiver to transfer to Temple in January.

Newsome was expected to be the Nittany Lions’ starting quarterback in 2010, but was beaten out by Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin. In his two seasons in State College, Newsome was known as a running quarterback.

He had 34 carries for 154 yards with three touchdowns while seeing limited action in 15 games at Penn State. The high school all-American also completed 14 of 24 passes for 144 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions.

The Owls are 1-1 following Saturday's 36-27 setback to Maryland. Temple's next game is Sept. 22 at Penn State.

Newsome should have stayed at Penn State as he could probably start at DB or RB with PSU's depleted depth from transfers and injuries. Hope things work out for him.

There has to be a place for Newsome in the starting lineup, especially in light of the fact that our receivers are not impressing anyone with their catching ability.

It makes no sense to have a player of Newsomes talent sitting on the bench. As a wideout, Newsomes gives Coyer another option. He's a big kid, with football savvy , who can catch and run with power . Hope he and Harris have great games against Penn State. Temple needs a signature win and beating Penn State would help the cause. The Penn State dedfense is great against the run. The Owls offense must be multidimensional, running the ball 75% of the time won't cut it. Open up the field with short passes and occasional long pass. If coach Addazio employs the same game plan he used against Maryland in the first half, Temple will loose.
