Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Lonegan's campaign said this morning that he is the first in the field to apply for matching state campaign funds.
Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogata, reported raising $380,535, according to campaign manager Kevin Collins, a veteran of conservative Republican politics.
If the state Election Law Enforcement Commission approves Lonegan’s request, he could get a state check for $543,000 bringing his campaign war chest to almost $1 million and helping him establish prominence in what is expected to be a crowded Republican field.
Candidates have until noon today to meet the first matching funds deadline, said Fred Herrmann, ELEC executive director. He said the commission could not yet confirm whether Lonegan or any other candidate submitted a matching funds application.
Candidate Rick Merkt, a Republican Morris County Assemblyman, said he is now beginning his fund raising. And, potential GOP candidate Christopher J. Christie, the former U.S. Attorney, has yet to make a formal campaign commitment.
So far, Gov. Corzine, seems to be the only major Democrat in the race.

Republicans raising money is controversial to the Democrat-Media Complex, like the Inquirer/Daily News. Democrats raising money, like the millions 0bama raised, some from foreign sources when they turned off some security checks when accepting donations via credit card, just shows widespread support and is peachy. And of course you are a liberal millionaire like Corzine/Kennedy/Laut/Bloomberg/Buffet, that's even better. Democrats = party of the rich. MiddleNameHussein
