Brian D. Levine, mayor of Franklin Township in Somerset County, plans to announce his entry into the Republican primary for governor this afternoon, despite the snow blanketing the state.

Levine, 50, is an accountant and has served on his township council since 1997. He plans to run on his record of trimming his township budget while adding police, improving roads and setting up a sinking fund to retire township debt.

He joins another former mayor running on record in the primary – Steve Lonegan, former mayor of Bogota. Former U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie is expected to make a formal announcement next week. Assemblyman Rick Merkt, (R., Morris) also is running.
